Case 580E brake help

Just purchased a 86 Case 580E and the brakes leave a lot to be desired. Haven't dug into it yet. Anyone know what I might can expect?

I wish I could help...but we had a 1995 model, I think it was, and the brakes were terrible from the time we got till the time it left. Other than that and being a touchy bas*^@d, it was a great machine.

My truck wants to be a semi when it grows up...

Don't know about the 580E but When I had a 580C the brakes were a piece of s**t. (actually the whole machine was) I have seen larger brakes on motorcycles. The C had a external band around a small drum. As you applied brakes the braking torque would cause some internal pads through a ball and ramp setup to press against the side of the drum sort of like a disc. Dont remember but the drum was maybe 6".

I know have a Cat 420D and it is a far superior machine.

i would get a pressure gauge and check pressure to start with. I would pull the filter and see if it is plugged with friction material. I do not know if they have a screen that can be pulled also. I am not familiar with case. Like if it has a master cylinder, or uses pressure from a transmission pump, or even has a brake pump.

The 416's and 20's were great to work on. The 420D's have a new holland rear axle. We had a lot of them at the dealer i did a lot of diffs, and brakes in them. To many townships trying to cut ditches with the buckets riding the brakes. The new E models went to a cat designed rear axle with final drives.

It appears the brakes are wet brakes. They are bolted to the side of the transmission. Certainly low enough to be full of oil if not sealed real well. See some oil on the outside of the right brake. If they are supposed to be dry that may be the problem then! Have to plunder eBay for a shop manual. This is actually a Super E machine. Looks like the master cylinders for the brakes are under the dash. 23 years old so it sure possible they are worn out. ...or, maybe they just were never very good to start with. Only ran older 580's like the CK model, which had no brakes. Can't find a parking brake on it anywhere! Hard to believe something was made with no provision to park! Maybe some little fairy stole it? More when I make time to tear into it.

Parking brake is a small think disc on the output of the tranny. It has a squeeze type mechanical caliper.
