12 valve cummins fuel

i just recently bought a 97 flatbed dodge with only 125,000 miles. i have set my valves and made adjustments on the pump. i boosted the waste gate up and im still only getting 15 miles to the gallon. The truck does have 410 gears but i only drive it at 60 miles an hour.

Moved thread to 12V section.

What adjustments did you make to the pump? Wastegate adjustments won't really help with mileage, but they will let you hold more boost longer, I would be careful adjusting the wastegate to much with out a boost gauge in the truck. What all is done to the truck as far as mods? Driving style will also effect mileage depending on how the truck is being driven.

If you can fill out your sig, and will let us help you more.

Also you can read the sticky's in the 12valve section and they are extremely helpful.

the only thing that will help with mileage on a 12 valve is alot of time and a good set of injectors........ that is motor wise.

I am like Buck2 tell us all you know about the truck that will help. And adding some timing will help. We need to know things like ride height, 2 or 4 wd, tire size, 5 speed or auto.

Now I really doubt the truck really has only 125,000 miles on a 14 going on 15year old truck. That would be less than 10,000 miles per year. It is possible but doubtful. Usually I would start out saying

Tab the killer dowel pin or make sure it has been done.
Check your brake pads.
Check your wheel bearing.
Next Get a better air filter. (BHAF)
Next Get gauges. Pyro, Boost at the least.
Next Set your timing to 14.5 degrees, maybe a little more.
Next Get a 4 inch turbo back exhaust system.
Next Get a 4k GSK (Don't rev above 3200 without new valve springs 60 lb or better).
Next Get a set of good injectors, by now yours are old enough they need the pop pressure set and may need rebuilding you can get a set of 5X12 for what it will cost to repair yours.
There is more but that will keep you busy.

Your engine isn't the problem. You can do whatever you want to try and make it beter, but really won't change anything. It IS however, the flatbed. PERIOD. Been there, done that...........

Getting 15mpg with that setup is doing good. Mine went from 16-18 down with the stock dually box, to 13-14.

What I would check is the fuel pressure.
Flush the pressure regulator, block the return line with a pair of pliers till the fuel transfer pump rattles then release. Do that a couple of times.
The fuel line from the filter to the pump, If it has not been modified, remove it and cut out as long a section as you can, leaving a 2 inch straight section, then I use a double flare kit and bulge the ends. Installing a section of 3/8 fuel line makes an accumulator boosting and smoothing the fuel pressure.
Check the CAC. While doing it put the plug in the right side first, Check the piping, the intake manifold cover the waist gate for leakage. I have found many a waist gate with blown diaphragm, valve guides, leaking into the Crankcase.
Playing with the waist gate does no good you are restricting the exhaust above the air demand of the engine.
