Rough idle 6.0?

My friend has a 2003 6.0 that just recently started to stumble/ have a rough idle very intermittently. He says it does it while the truck is moving and while it's stopped. I asked if it seemed to be completely killing the engine but he said no, so I guess that rules out the CPS.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

check the oil..
Overfill will cause the rough idle sometimes.

Life changes, so roll with it, not against it.

Mine has been doing a funny idle too. It'll kinda get real quiet then after 2 or 3 seconds kidda click back up and sounds like a diesel. I hear a fluxuation (sp?) in boost alil too. I'll stay behind it and the exhuast will flow, then it seems to spool just alil bit then back to normal flow. AND I have noticed this change in boost alil during cruising too. Anyone have any ideas? It seems to be at the low RPMs like top gear at like 50 or so MPH. Anyone?? Startin to scare me..

At idle the change in sound is the cycling of the egr. It is part of the strategy and can only be changed by a flash that addresses that concern. The new calibration will keep the egr open to keep engine noise low at idle. If you are at an extended idle the strategy will time out and the egr will close and the engine will become louder. The missfire rough idle maybe caused by a bad high pressure oil pump.

There is another symptom that I forgot to list. When it has this rough idle/ cut out/ go dead symptom, it will blow just a little black smoke and then go back to normal.

I have read that the 6.0 turbo's need to be dissasembled and cleaned at 50,000-75,000 miles (depends on your driving habits), could this be the problem?

Turbo really doesn't do anything at idle to cause your symptoms. Has move to do with injectors, high pressure oil pump. ICP and IPR.

Oil overfill and EGR strategy / issues are reasons.

In addition and very specific to the '03:

ICP Sensor Problems:
This is now covered by Customer Satisfaction Program 03B05. It applies to trucks build through 2-3-03. The program will be in affect until 12-31-05. Ford is authorizing a free oil and filter change under this program until 12-31-03.
Some 6.0 PowerStroke engines may exhibit rough/rolling idle, poor idle return, lack of power, injector fault codes or excessive smoke. This may be caused by the ICP sensor reading incorrectly. The ICP sensor and connector terminals should be inspected for damage (the ICP is at the rear of the engine, under the turbo), and the sensor circuits checked for opens or shorts. With the engine at operating temperature (engine oil above 180 degrees), the ICP sensor signal should be 0.16-0.28 volts (less than 70 PSI) with the key on and engine off. The engine needs to be off for at least two minutes for this test. If the ICP signal is not within this range, replace the sensor with P/N 3C3Z-9F838-EA

And lets not forget about wire chaffing.
