What happens when you run out of gas?

I have always heard its a terrible thing to run a diesel out of gas.

So, I ran out today in my 2004. After refilling it seems to run fine. Maybe a hair down on power, but it's highly likeey that I am imagining it.

My question is:
Does anything bad happen, and where did this idea come from?????

First off you can not run a diesel out of gas. Second I don't think it would hurt much just stops running. But I am no expert.

i think that the problem lies with trying to reprime the system if that was needed. i have heard that can be a pain in the A#$.

Garage
I have ran mine out of fuel twice now, it shakes real bad and won't go. It's hasn't had any negative effects as of yet. Unless that is what caused my EGR system problem.

I just let turned to key to the acc. position a couple times and it starts right back up, no problems priming.

The killer is my trucks said I had 22 and 30 miles left before empty when it ran out?

Anyone else's computer off like mine is?

OMG its a classic. Go on youtube and do a search for "ode to my car" There are a few videos featuring the song. I can't post a link beacause of crappy language.

I ran out at 15 miles till empty btw.

About 400 feet from the gas station. It started missing real bad for a long enough for me to run a red light and get it off the highway. Upon start up it missed for a minute then was back to its normal self.

Running out of fuel in a 6.0 is murder on your injectors. Your hi pressure oil system firing the injectors is up to 5000 psi. With no fuel in the injectors that acts as a cushion they are hammering themselves. You may get away with it for a time but long term you are not doing the injectors or your pocket book any good. :givemebeer

Some of us still in the stone ages have dialup. So I stay off us sites that require any downloading but I will take your word for it.
