synthetic for Diesel VS synthetic that can be used in diesels

I'm referring to Valvoline premium blue found here http://www.valvoline.com/pages/produ...sp?product=102


and Valvoline syn power Full Synthetic Motor Oil.

Is SynPower motor oil okay for my diesel truck?
Valvoline SynPower is designed for use in light duty gasoline trucks, as well as gasoline and diesel passenger vehicles. Diesel engines in trucks require API CG-4/CH-4 type oil. For premium performance, Valvoline Premium Blue 2000 would be recommended.

Look at this....

Due to the cooler EGR system, a new oil requirement has been developed. Use only oils that are API service rated CI-4 or higher, prefered viscosity SAE 15W-40.
I have verified the following oils meet CI-4:

Ford is recommending to use the following oils for the listed operating temperature:
SAE 15W-40 is the preferred oil above 30 degrees, but it is acceptable for use down to 10 degrees, and is recommended for towing down to this temperature.
SAE 10W-30 is the preferred weight between -10 to 30 degrees.
SAE 5W-30 and 5W-40 is acceptable for use below 30 degrees, and 0W-30 is acceptable below zero.
(All temperatures are in Fahrenheit)

im running mobil 1 turbo diesel 5w-40, and it seems to turn over alot better in the mornings

{95 F250 Powerstroke XLT} 5 spd, Wildman 6 pos. chip, custom IC, ADs, AFE stage 2 intake, 3" down pipe to custom 5in stack. EBPV break, shimed FPR, idm mod by mattymx, CCV mod, Leveling Kit, diprocol egt and boost guages.

Cummins' Take on Lube Oils

Gentlemen:

I don't know if the attached .pdf file will add help or more debate to what to use, or what not to use.. These are Cummins' thoughts as to "what is" and "what ain't" when it comes to lube oil for their engines..

To me, it's cut and dried as I believe in their test methods, and the fact that this info is not trying to sell you something, says volumes.. IMO, it's good solid & unbiased info, besides being current..

In our markets, we base oil changes on duty cycle and/or engine hours. We deal w/ engines where some use well upwards of 1000 gallons of fuel per LITER of engine displacement per YEAR and only use premium oil filters from Fleetguard and Dino oil that meets their specs.. We have issues quite often in the high duty cycle vessels (ones the operate at close to 100% power much of the time or operate at levels above 60 HP per liter of output) , but never due to oil..

No, the only synthetic Valvoline makes for diesel is Premium Blue Extreme 5W40.

Which, coincidentally, is what I use.

A really good source of oil information is Bob Is the Oil Guy. They might be able to help you out.

great input, got to take some time to take it all in.


I have always used Valvoline, but I might break the bank with the blue synthetic oil... have to find the next best/cheapest for diesel

That is some good info but it cant really be used for those with the HEUI injection system. Our injectors are hydrolic and the lube oil also has to be used as hydrolic fluid. This in itself puts the oil under more stress and breaks it down sooner so finding that perfect oil for the PSD is hard to do. Anyways I run Rotella T synthetic.

I use 76's Royal triton SYN 15w40 thats what we run in all our OTR and EXC. trucks at work. Never seen a cleaner valve train when pulling the valve covers after a million miles besides new that hasnt had oil put in it yet. Youll never be able to find any sludge and after 5,000 miles in my truck its still clean and not BLACK. Ill never use anything else.
