6.2 flywheel question

I want to put a 6.2 engine into my C-65 chevy
It currently has a gas drinking 366 in it and 5-speed with 2 speed rear.
I would like to keep the big truck flywheel with its much larger clutch and tranny input shaft.

what is the diff between the diesel flywheel and the gas flywheel???

If it is just a diff in balance that can be fixed by matching the balance on the original 6.2 flywheel and the truck gas flywheel (bolt pattern at crank the same?)
The bell housing will fit fine, I just need to know the actual differences between the two engines flywheels. Like from say two identical trucks (my engine is '84) one with gas engine and one with diesel engine (just flywheel specs)

The flywheel for the gasser is different than the one from the diesel. The diesel's is designed for more balanceing of the engine. Do not substitute! Cant remember clutch size of the mediums off hand but seems they were a tad bigger then the 1 ton under. Perhaps simply doing away with the piliot bearing of the diesel flywheel, will inable you to use the medium 5spd tranny to the 6.2 engine. I brainstormed this about 15 years ago, but have forgot much of the info. I was gonna install a c60 5spd behind a 6.2 in a 3/4 ton.. on edit it seems i remember everything will bolt up, it was the clutch size and input shaft that had me against a wall. Perhaps adapting the medium clutch to the 6.2 flywheel was the solution? This ofcourse means machine work. Also a word of advise if you dont know allready. The only thing you will gain is a bit better fuel mileage, the 366 was the better performer, especially with the low ratio rear the 2 ton likely has..

As I stated, I want the bigger 13" clutch from the med duty.

BALANCE is not a problem, the flywheel can be balanced to match the 6.2 with very little effort.

I will be using the adapter from the gas engine and larger tranny input. The pilot bearing is in the flywheel on the large clutch med duty trucks. (NEVER RUN WITHOUT AT LEAST A PILOT BUSHING, if its a close fit it will weld itself together (crank to input), if its a loose fit it will destroy the trans input bearing)

The main question I have simply is the bolt patern the same specs for gas engines and diesel engines from this era????

OR will the gas flywheel bolt onto the diesel engine (dont care if its correct)
Will all the bolts fit?

Not all med duty's used the larger clutch


Also If it was a 427 I would probably keep it as is, But after owning a few of these 366's I would best place them in the catagory of best use as a boat anchor. Old carbed ones were lucky to see 8mpg at best and very slow, powerful yes but slow

I wasnt implying run without a piliot bearing, although re reading the post i could see the miscomunnication. sorry, remove the 6.2 bearing from the crank. As to the bolt lineup question, i have gone from 427 to 350 and vise versa in medium chevys[ engine swaps] and everything bolted up tranny and starter wise. Havin said this, i have seen folks go from 6.2 to 350/454 swaps before, and say everything underneath bolted in place. Also had a guy tell me he used the manual fywheel off a 350 on a 6.2 swap in he did, 6 month latter he was talking about the 6.2 breakin a crank at the back of the engine. In short i believe bolt up wise you will be ok. Simple thing to try would maybe go to you local napa dealer or such, see if they will let you compare flywheel bolt patterns.

That sounds like what I was looking for.

Any good maching shop can reballance the larger flywheel to the correct balance for the 6.2 engine. That would solve the broken cranks and rear cap problem. And would be an easy fix if it bolts up.

Also the starter bolts to the bellhousing (if I remember correctly) so that would solve any starter to flywheel alignment problems.

Hmmm, your straining my brain again. I know for fact the 6.2 starter bolts to the block. I havent been under a gm medium in over a year, that was to change the oil. I will have to get under my c70 gasser today and see where that starter bolts to, sure want to say it's the block based on memory. If thats the case, you shouldnt have any issues other then adapting the fly wheel.

Never messed with one newer than 71, But even the man trans pickup from this year bolted to the bell with 3 bolts. Starter had a cast iron head. You could never move the starter out far enough with it bolted to the block to fit the much larger flywheel.

Guess that's why they used the bellhousing mounted flywheel in the first place.
