Mack 460

I usually drive my CL713 E-9 500 Mack 18 speed 4.56 gearing. I'm in the process of putting a high lift tailgate on it. My Dad is on vacation so I'm driving his truck. Mack Vision E-7 460 13 speed don't know the gearing. That thing is a dog no power in the lower rpms. When the power comes on it is like a 2 stroke. It also didn't seem to generate any power till the turbo was pushing over 28 psi. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with the 460. On flat land it is fine. Hills it falls on its face in a hurry. He just had the rack ran and everything was fine. I can pull the same hills 2-3 gears higher. These are dumptrucks also. His is a converted road truck. Mine is spec. for severe duty.

if his is a converted tractor, it probably has much taller road gears, something in like 3.55's, that would make a big difference in low end pulling power

I knew the taller gears would make some difference. I just think it be so much. Thanks.

My Pete has 425 hp but 3.70 highway gears b/c it was a tractor, and with a load guys with 300-350 hp trucks can out accelerate me from a stop b/c they have really low gears like 4.56+, but they usually top out around 65-70 mph where I'm cruising right along at 1500 RPM

From what I've been told, even by the dealer, that the 427s outperform the 454 and 460 engines. My guess it is all in the programming. Most likely because of emissions.

Gearing makes a huge difference. The KW I run has 3.90s, and the last Mack we demoed before getting this truck had 3.55. The CX had a E7 427 and the KW has a 430hp C-12. The KW outpulls it big time.

We have a '90 CH Mack with a EM6-300 w/ straight 5spd/5.13s, and a '95 CH with a E7-350/9spd RR/4.17s. The 300 can pull almost as good as the 350. Biggest thing hurting the '90 is the tranny. A 13spd would work wonders in it.

You have to keep the rpms up on the newer E7 2002-3 models, if it has a waste gated turbo you will never see anything more than 33 psi boost for sum reason they won't give it any more jam.the pre waste gate 460s were much better but if the engine has a waste gate don't expect to much more.

I wonder if there is a over the road programming and vocational? It was just night and day compared to mine. I just didn't like it very much. It has a great ride and turning radius but that was about it.

If hes the origanal owner and complains loud enough they MAY help him out in the programing department!If the truck is equiped with A wastegate and it gets anywhere near 33 psi or greater boost the system will derate power to 70 % if it sees 33 psi! The fault light on the dash will indicate a fault when this happens And the power is cut back.

Like Fred said, Those 460's are a very agressive program. Meaning you have to really drive them hard to make them pull. Just like everyone used to say about the old 2 stroke Driptroits.

Unless it is a gearing issue, then there is only one way to fix it.

2005 Regular Cab Dodge. Cummins of course, G56, power everything. I got the optional Blue Heeler passenger seat attatchment also.

I wouldn't throw the towel in yet, if it not a 460p that is sounds like he has got a straight 460 or 460E torque curve is as flat as kansas have it up to a 460p it'll take the hp up to 487 and torque to 1700lb and put more arch in it but compared to a E9 it will probley fill doggy no matter what you do I have 2001 vision with a 427 it'll pull strong down to 11-1200rpms
