Cat 3406E 2ws uprate capability

I've done a lot of internet searching and made a few phone calls and can't seem to get a clear answer on this. I'm looking at a couple of trucks for sale, both have 2WS 3406E engines rated at 435hp. I'm going to want to bump it up to 475 or 550hp and want to know if they have the internals to handle it, specifically the pistons. A turbo or set of injectors doesn't bother me if they need changed.

One serial number is 2ws35081 with core AR 166-5351 and perf spec 179-9891.

The other is 2ws12632, Core AR 166-5351, perf spec 172-1172.

Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Your best bet is take it to the Cat dealer. Explain them what you want. They have to flash everything into the ECM. If it needs other upgrade parts they should be able to provide. It's money they want.. Have a good day.

Thanks so much for the responses. I found some uprate charts and posts last night that indicated the 435hp is basically the lowest of the "high hp" engines. So going up to 475 or 550 is doable without basically overhauling the engine like you would a 350hp. Just didn't want to waste money on something that wasn't the ideal engine. Thanks again!

Don't take it to Cat! All they will do is put the latest and greatest low nox file in it and it will run like a turd! Find someone who will put a program in it other than Cat or a truck maker and you will be a lot happier.

If you are in the Ohio area I know people who can help.

Absolutely, I've definitely picked up on that and will go the custom tune route when the time comes. I've read the several posts on this topic particularly the ones from Mr Haney. I'm in the Kansas City area so its not real hilly around here and I'll be pulling a hopper trailer. Coming out of the fields we tend to load them pretty heavy though. I wouldn't be looking for huge power but a 550/1850 or maybe a tad more would more than do what I want.

I've pulled a lot of loads with a friends 425 3406C and it does okay but if I want to haul into downtown KC and deal with on ramps etc more power would be nice.

Turbos are not the same between 435 and 550, while the stock turbo may do the job it won't do it for long.

Okay, but as far as you know the pistons and injectors are?

I just called Foley Cat and got the typical answer. "Oh you'll have to bring it in and we'll have to get approval from Cat and so on and so forth and that usually starts at $1000." I said well for now I'm just trying to find out what it is going to take. So this fellow is supposed to find out and call me back....

Did some more digging and finally came up with something hopefully everyone can use when this comes up again. If I was more tech savvy I'd post pics of the relevant pages. Comparing the part numbers from the 550 versions and the 435 version I'm looking at show they all match up. Am I looking at this right?

They only use different injectors in the truly low HP versions, 355,375, 410.

Your engine has the same internals as a 550
