Were they really that powerful!? that IS impressive.....ive seen some driveshafts bent like pretzals....but not like that! hehe......*mutters to himself* "i gotta get me one'a them there rigs..."

1997 dodge ram 1500 4x4 318 auto: summit ignition, fastman throttle body, holley fuel pump 23lb injectors, 180* high flow t stat, open element intake, 3 inch cat back exhaust out the side, high flow water pump, high pressure oil pump...needs trans.

87 Chevy K30 6.2 4x4 4 speed...restoration/build

i liked the sound of thoses old v8s i had two of them back in the early 80s they sounded like helicopters with straight pipes. i hand only one BIG problem with them i
couldnt keep camshafts in them.

I Know They Go Back As Far As The 70's I All So Know Of A V8 That Beat A Cat With Mearine Injectors And Computer Pushing Over 800 Hp At A Truck Pull. The Cat Pulls Rock Bucket The Mack Pulls Carnnie Rides. There Are A Lot Of Web Sites Thet Are Dedicated To Macks And There Owners. Look For Sites That Deal In Older Macks And Older Mack Truck Clubs. Im A Friend Of Andys Thats Been Driving For 11 Years, And Have Driven B Modles To Ch Modles.

Late to the party I know but I wanted to add that every mack v-8 or built 3408 I have heard sounded like it was on its last leg, like a chugging sound or like it wasnt hitting on all 8 but I guess its just the way they sounded. Cool motors though.

I think your right abouth that.. they sound like a 6cyl thats missing .. our 440 V8 chuggs when its not loaded but when its pulling good it makes a "normal" sound..the V8 in the company truck only revs to 1850 RPM so all that power is made down low.

My uncle has 2 '89 377 Petes with 425hp 3406B Cats. On the one truck, it twisted off 2 driveshafts this past fall.

I drove a few V8 500 mack Superliners in the late 80s. Back then when the big horses were 425 cats and 444 cummins, the mack was the king of the hill for pulling but evrything you gained on the up hill you lost going down hill. The Dynatard engine brake was only good for making noise. I rember breaking alot of head bolts and having heating problems. I wouldent trade my 625 Accert for one.

i remember the v8 macks in the late 60s,,,bigest piece of may-pops ever put in a truck...500 hp mack? i wouldnt trust one for a heart beat. macks were good compared to a brockway and that wasnt much. big piece of turds,,ruff riding ,cold in the winter, hot in the summer. shake and bake,,hehe,,i dont miss any make ever made. although i thought a B-75 was a nice looking truck.

Mack E9 was 998 cid I think they made it up until 98 or so. They were better then the 3408 CATs - the Cat was a 60 deg design and played hell on the cranks (another member on here that knows diesels told me cranks run $15,000)
Ive always heard good about them, but the rebuild costs were expensive.
Id still say Macks best engines were the inliners though.

That true and what more the E-9 engine are 90° V-8 format instead of 60°V-8 what 3408 been doing and they offset the crankshaft to get even 90° fireing sequece.

for the toqurewise the E-9 do have insane amount of toqure at super low rpm IIRC they peak out about 1000-1100 rpm range but HP rateing they are not too bad they kinda run out of " steam " about 1600 rpm or so.

but for marineized version i did see it not too long ago they were dishing out about 950 HP with twin turbo and monster sized intercooler dang i don't want to know how much tq it dish out but i know it is over 2800 ft tq for sure.
