Cat 3406 overhead

When doing an overhead, do you adjust the bridges first then the valves
or does it not matter. I know TDC intake 1 2 4 @.015 exhaust 1 3 5 @ .030
then rotate and do the others. 346D jake @ .067

When checking mine today, the bridges are loose, I can move them by hand on both the intake and exhaust. The exhaust valves are close to spec as are the jakes. But the intake valve lash is very tight ( I cant squeeze .005 under it ) all intakes are this tight.

I only adjusted # 6 intake today. I first tightened the bridge up (went to contact plus 30 deg) Then I backed the intake valve to .015 when I was done you could move the bridge by hand again.

I assume this is being done right

What exactly is involved in an overhead, when does it need to be done and is it the same process for the C-15's (Bridge Motors)?

The 3406E and C15 up to the ACERT do not have adjustable bridges. You set the valve lash in the same sequence as any other 3406....although you have to have a Cat gauge to set the injector height.

Also, a good rule of thumb is every year or 100K miles on the overhead. As far as how to do it, you find TDC for #1 or #6. You have to pin the flywheel, and both rockers will be loose on either #1 or #6. I like to start with #1 TDC and do intake 1,2,4.... and exhaust 1,3,5.... injector 3,5,6 and Jake 1,3,5. Mark the balancer and rotate one time. Then do intake 3,5,6....exhaust 2,4,6....injector 1,2,4....and Jake 2,4,6. Jake lash varies according to engine model and horsepower from .027 to .037. A good rule of thumb I use is .035 Jake lash for all applications. I have owned all series of E and C-15's and it always worked good for me.

Is there a special order when you run the overhead? Like Valves then jake then injector?

does everyone agree 100K is a good interval to get an overhead?

Always do valves, injectors, then Jakes. 100K interval is Cat's recommendation
