n14 oil pressure

Whats normal oil pressure for an n14 cummins?

well i happen to have an n14 service manual in front of me so....10 psi low idle minimum,30psi at 1300 minimum,45-55psi at 2100.

What he said.....Cummins after 1985 were not famous for having decent oil pressure. I had one...1998 model....8-10 at idle, and never more than 37-38 at road speed.

Cummins claimed high oil pressure robbed horsepower.....not that it would help anyway. Damn...did I say that?

Thanks guys! Sounds like I have nothing to worry about then. I just bought the truck and it ran great just was a little worried about the oil pressure.

hey NOW!!!! If you dont like the oil psi,shim the pump which is a hell of alot nicer to work on than pulling the pan!!!!!!

My rule of thumb has always been 20/40 with an N14 when COLD.

20 Idle, 40 at full noise.

If you have a N14 that had say 12 lbs oil preasure and then drops to 10, or lower, then I would be looking at the piston cooling nozzles. If one breaks it can damage the kit. If you have one that will not get oil preasure above say 5 lbs then the gears are slipping on the drive shaft. I have seen lots of them do that, to confirm that you remove the pick-up, and take a large screw driver and turn the gear. I had one that the shaft walked forward enough, that it would disconnect the PS pump coupling. This is a minor problem with a great engine below 500 hp.

I have also done a few with the gear walking on the shaft. I have to say though not affraid of any N14 525 HP,we have lots and I mean lots of them around here,one in particular has a bullrack fleet of 17 trucks that do not live easy lifes and they have all ran a million plus except one that had injector cup issues. They all run 110,000 plus a year.

Engines are like real estate location location location. Here at 525 we had a lot of broken head bolts blown head gaskets, and when you took off the head you could see where the head was squirming on the block giving you a worn pattern on the block, a perfect imprint of the head gasket.
