12v conversion in a 85 chevy

hi there.. im trying to gather information on doing a 12v cummins conversion to my 85 chevy one ton... i need help with what kind of cummins should i use. maybe theres a web site i could go to which i could buy motor mounts. Also what king of transmission i should use. And how to wire the thing in right so i still could use my factory gauge cluster and air conditioning. i just need any suggestions please

There is a lot of different options. How much power do you want? Do you want to build it to suite mileage? The 89-93 engines seem to get the best mileage when set up right. The 94 up engines are the in line pump engines and are the easiest to get power out of cheaply. 98.5 and up are 24v electronic units, 03.5 and up is common rail. There are a few places that offer mounts as well. First you need to decide what all you want on the truck for options and choose a nice set or brackets. Some offered on the net suck.

thanks, i want an enigne that is cheap to buy and would make power but not alot. and is easy to swap because this is my frist swap,, maybe the frist generation will work but i was told to get the cummins that are factory intercooled like 94 97.5 12v... then i need to figure out what transmisson to use becasue i would like to keep my 205 tcase

You can use the chevy nv4500 for a manual, or the dodge nv4500. Make sure you get the diesel chevy version if you are concerned about the lower first gear ratio. You can use the dodge auto OD trans and non OD 727 if you want to retain a np205 t case. However they differ from the chevy versions in mounting and input shafts. You can use your existing tranny and buy an adapter to go from the 6bt to the chevy bell housing. Try here: www.destroked.com . They are expensive but by far the best adapter out on the market. I personally would use the dodge nv4500 and dodge np205 for a manual. And a 46 or 47rh with np205 for the auto. This way I could retain an overdrive top gear. Other wise you will want to have a tall tire or 3.08 gear to get any mileage out of the engine. Keep in mind that the 94-98 12v p-pump engine is also available in freightliner trucks, ford trucks, including louisville series, f-series, cab chassis models, and e chassis. Some buses utilize them as well as rv's. Watch ebay, I say an inline pump engine and non od allison trans on there for $1900.

my truck has a 6 inch lift with 33 and it has 411 or 410 gears.. what years could i find an nv4500 is that a 5 speed and a 205 tcase out of a dodge. it would be alot easier to use an adpater from the destroked website but i dunno if a turbo 400 will handle the power or what the rpms would be like in the final gear.. i what this truck to beable to drive anywhere and have no problems and maybe do a couple truck pulls

The NV4500 you want was used in the dodge V-10 and cummins powered trucks from 1994-2003. In 1998 or 1999 they changed the shifter to a bolt down style. This kind you can get a short throw shifter for. From 1994-1997 it had a push and twist style shifter and as far as I know no aftermarket shifter is available for this kind.

The chevy trucks used the NV4500 from I think 1992 up. They could have been used earlier but I am not for sure. You want the diesel model though because they have different gear ratios and some different internals to make them live longer versus the gas models.

The NP205 you need would have to come from a 1989-1993 dodge that had a getrag 5 speed with NP205.

You could also use the getrag tranny but they aren't very strong and cost about the same as the NV4500 so you might as well have the NV4500 and not have to worry about it.
