"engineering excellence" was one of the 6 criteria for the award.... and while i don't always agree with their choice for a winner, they tend to pick trucks/cars that make a significant improvement or change in philosophy to their segment... reminds me a bit of the Time Man of the Year award... you might not always like him, but you have to admit he's a game changer..
