NOT starting any flaming wars here, this is an HONEST question.

I am considering another truck to add for my business and looking real hard at a Dodge. I love the Cummins reputation but hate the truck itself. I love the Ford truck but hate the problematic Powerstroke.

What I want to know is: What are the major failures with the Dodge/Cummins combo's?

i would rather have a different tranny but i run the dog out of my 05 auto for 29000 miles now in 10 months and it has never messed up in any way at all. electronically its kinda weird but has never given me any problems, just notice lights surging on cold start ups for a few minutes and similar electronic things. i blew an infinity speaker and had an exhaust issue after a local shop chopped the muffler. but thats all. and i love it.

I love my truck and I beat the hell out of it. Never any problems except at high speed my drivers door seal lets wind in. other than that its awsome. the tranny is not that week. Im puttin down 402HP and I drive hard. No burnouts and no boost launches but I have a heavy foot. The stock tranny is doin just fine.

As far as dodge goes. The front ends are weak. They have been for a while. You will have to do front end work if you work the truck. I have never had an electrical problem with a dodge. My buddy has an 03 with no such problems. (lights will surge with most diesels when the glow plugs or intake heater cycles, it is a big draw on the system)
Transmissions can be an issue but you can make them much better with a few upgrades. Most of the time you are fine with the auto as long as you don't add more than 50 or so hp and you don't launch hard. They will work for you, maybe not as good as the other brands, but they can last with good maintenance.
Some say 3rd gen seats aren't very comfortable for long trips. This is an issue for some not an issue for others.
As for the cummins itself. Some injector issues in the past, don't know about them now. Other than that the engine is the only reason to buy the dodge in my opinion.

:agreed: The front ends kind of suck, I had the tie rod replaced at around 60k and it is getting loose again at close to 90k:nunu: . The trans are kind of weak, but can hold good power with a few mods. Other then that I run mine pretty hard and I have had very few problems with mine:Thumbup: .

The Dodges are built pretty well, the front ends on all 3 trucks Ford,GM and Dodge wear fast, there pretty much even there. The transmissions are hit or miss with Dodges, the 48RE really isnt a bad unit, and its pretty strong stock, its liek the GM 5.7 diesels, the reputation for bad trannies follows it like it does GM for bad diesels.I think you would be happy with a new Dodge, you sure arent going to find a better diesel engine in a light truck.

Injectors on a Cummins...................Cheap, actually looking at anything else.
The Dodge automatics have a bad rep for 2 good reasons
Poorly desigined V/B and not very efficeint T/C with weak lock up.
I haven't had a problem with my front end, ask any of the cars I've hit.
My trany lasted a few months on the mods I gave it.
