Getting pieces around for a oil bypass filter system...figure it can't hurt to have one...

Got an older (new) Amsoil filterhead and two (new) BE90 filters off eBay last week. ($58) This filter head has the what looks like the 1/16" orifice so I should be good to go.

Just bought 30 feet of 1/4" ID hydraulic hose last night...it's five pieces that are 6 feet long each...price was right for the lot. ($24) The general consensus is that 1/4" should be ok...might lose some pressure over that length, but since the flow is restricted to 1/16", it shouldn't really matter.

Got a bid in on a "tranny" cooler right now...one of those new fangled ones that look like a piece of extruded aluminum pipe with fins. It's only a 12 inch, but I figured why not? ($35)

Going to order the swivel fitting from Amsoil to install the return in the filler cap. ($12)

My plan is to pull oil from the OEM filterhead...the 1/8inch pipe plug in the top of our existing filter...everyone pulls off here.

Then run back along the frame to the first bed support off the frame...I'm going for a mount similar to the FASS...figure if I get it high enough that I'll be able to run those 10" long filters eventually.

From there, I'll return back along the frame to the cooler that I'm going to mount to the frame...probably mount it inside the frame if I have room from the exhaust and the exhaust isn't going to be adding heat. It's on the low pressure side of the deal, so I should never need to worry about it.

And finally back to the filler cap like most guys are doing.

Other than the cooler, the system is basically what everyone else has done, short mounting back under the bed. I don't see any problems with this setup...anyone have any comments??

I'll have around $145 in my complete "system" with a spare filter (if you look at the true Amsoil kits, they don't come with filters) and have it mounted where I want it, not where they think it fits best...

What do you think of this?? And for those of you with the filters, how often do you change them if you are running regular dino oil?? I'm figuring every 3rd change (or 15k miles) on these BE90s, then probably every 30k on the 110s when I finally get to that point.

I don't think you are going to gain anything with the cooler since the oil flow rate is so low.

Agreed...but at the same time it will be slow enough that there should be significant heat loss. I figured it probably wouldn't do much, but every little bit helps...

More so I can say I have it...:smoke:

Any other thoughts?? Or are you too skeer'd to run one...

I ordered the Amsoil fitting today...should win the cooler tonight...if i don't win this 12 inch, I might up to a 18 incher (only a few bucks more)...I got all the fittings I needed to plumb it (short the hose)...

Got some 1/4 inch aluminum diamond plate that I'm going to use for my bracket under the bed...I should have the filter mounted this weekend...use a little bit of the aluminum plate that I'm going to stiffen my camper up with...

Won't have the cooler until next week...the hoses might be here tomorrow or Saturday...since Amsoil ships with UPS, it probably be a week before I get the swivel.

I should be able to get things plumbed in as I get them...I need to order a 100psi guage from Jegs or Summit just so I have a "real" oil pressure reading...think I might just throw it inline in a tee.

Well, got it all installed and boy, what a difference...

I had to increase the orifice size up to 5/64" to get 18oz/minute...the factory was giving me 14oz/5 minutes...I'm going to drop back to 1/16th because I think it might be flowing too much when hot...

My oil has 2k on it and it is still transparent...it is dark gray, but it doesn't look like sludge either!! I'm very happy with the setup...I would recommend the Amsoil filters to anyone...

I still need to install my bypass on my 06. One of these days . . . .

For the length of hose I'm running 1/16" is perfect for the correct flow rate as determined by Amsoil (.165 gal/minute, or app 22oz/minute).

I didn't mount the head to the frame, I mounted it to a cross member of the bed...basically a bed crossmember...it sits about even with the front spring hanger on the outside of the frame.

So far so good at this point...

Sounds like a good place to mount. Thats a lot of hose to run, though.

Yeah, since I'm not relying on it to be perfect (still runing Rotella oil, not synthetic, and doing "normal" oil changes) I didn't think it would matter for my purpose.

It might not flow anything in the winter...1/4"ID line feeding a 1/16"ID orifice almost 10 feet from the source going through a cooler...well, you get the picture. I won the hose on eBay for $25...then used typical brass barbed fittings to splice it together...I didn't use fancy AN fittings or anything like that...hose barbs and hose clamps.

Most guys are running them behind the front bumper...seems to be a good place, but I looked at mine and it seems a bit cramp and hard to access to get access with a drill for the holes...and I wanted it out in the open and a location to mount my cooler, which does work BTW...

Yeah, I think I'll be looking a little closer for my use. I may wait until I decide which front bumper to go with before installing the bypass. Depends on how long that takes!
On the 06, there is a nice flat, open spot on the inside of the passenger side frame rail right behind the radiator that looks like it might be a good spot. I may have to look into that instead of waiting for the bumper.

BTW, how much temp differnce you seeing with the cooler? Any affect on performance or mileage?

As for temp, never measured it, but it is too hot to touch going out, and pretty warm coming back (but not hot enough that I can't hang onto it)...really precise, I know...but it is the best I can do for now...if I had it to do again, probably would have either gone a lot bigger or none at all...

As far as mileage...too many other things to tell...got 21.5mpg going to SC...got 22.74mpg coming back from SC...with 4.10s and everything. The engine is definately happier with it on...not as much valve noise that I normally hear after the oil got a few miles on it...
