It is my understanding that you need to have a simple code reader to see these codes. I think they are pretty much available at any auto parts store nowadays. They plug into the diagnostic port located under the steering column area.

If anyone has updated codes or more info on reading them, feel free to post the info, or PM a moderator to have it added to the post.

Hello, This is my first time here. I have a 98 Chev w/6.5.it,s got a po251 code.Autozone read it as "injection pump fuel metering control-A-,You say it,s a injection pump cam problem. Can you help with how to cure this problem? Thanx!!

Any OBD2 code reader will work on a 96+ but all it will do is just that..READ CODES. You will need the above chart to decipher them as the generic code readers may show the # as something else. If you want bi directional capabilty such as setting TDCO to my knowledge the following products will work(listed in order best to "will work":
GM Vetronix Tech 2(Big Bux)
Autoenginuity(I have heard this is the best low cost tool availible for the 6.5 OBD2)
Car Code(never used it but supposed bi directional with 6.5TD)
Snap ON MT2500(it works but give false readings. You have to know what the difference is on the timing #s)
That is it for bi directional AFAIK.
