Hello, Working with my buddy on his uncles 1989 F250 7.3 (i believe) IDI/E4OD. We pulled the trans a couple weeks ago and had it rebuilt because it completley crapped the bed LOL. We just finished installing the trans today and the truck will not start. It just makes a clicking sound that comes from underneath/behind the air cleaner. We have checked battery voltage, cleaned terminals, and bled the fuel system up to the filter. We have also tried to start it in all gear positions to rule out linkage adjustment. The truck will cycle the wait to start light and when you go to crank it just clicks. Anyone got any suggestions I would greatly appreciate some guidance as we are both used to the bigger diesels :pointlaugh

Sounds to me like you need to take the starter off and clean were it mounts to the motor that way in gets a good ground. Also You might want to check the soliod on the starter that could be it or it could be the soliod on the fender.

Thanks for the reply but the clicking noise was not from those solenoids but we will check that out.

The clicking noise from under the air cleaner is the glow plug controller. I agree with the starter assesment, either poor ground, poor positve connections, or the wires aren't hooked up right. I don't recall if there is more than one small terminal to hook up or not, been a little while since I looked at the starter, and I deal with too many vehicles... but sometimes there is a neutral switch terminal on the solenoid, but I'm thinking not on the diesel since it is a secondary solenoid...

Problem was not with the starter, shift linkage was out of adjustment causing it not to know it was in park. Thanks for the help.
