Has anyone experienced difficult shifting with the Getrag? Particularly into third gear? Downshifting into third normally wants to grind unless I double clutch which gets annoying. It's a newly rebuilt tranny so I'm a little confused as to why it's doing this.

Is there any special oil other than regular 10W-30 that the Getrag prefers?

I have been running Amsoils 5W30 syncromesh synthetic transmission fluid. It really has made for some smooth shifting in my rebuilt getrag 360. I also overfilled my tranny 1 qt. as recommended by others in this forum. Been running smooth and shifting great so far.

Has it done this from the start? The blocking ring clearance may not be right.
Use synthetic oil. It may work with 20-50 if the clearance is close.

A work around is to go neutral throttle to release the gear with out the clutch and change the RPM to match and then use the clutch to go to gear.

If you start using a synthetic oil in you tranny you might find a few leaks in your tranny.

I once picked up a truck that the mech tried to tell me that a missing blocking ring would 'wear in' and work normal. I called dispatch and talked to the counter help and made it clear that the 'repair' was not. I skip shifted around the problem back to the home shop and helped pull the transmission. We took pictures from lifting the top to the missing blocking ring. They put in about $600 in parts and other than leaving a part on the bench, it looked good but the boss killed the check because they lied, it would have been easy to chip the gear and damage the bearing under the gear because of the missing piece. I don't know what they worked out later but if it is not fixed when you pick it up the mech is not going to like it at all when you come back a week later, turn around and take it back and complain. Some errors are cheap if they are found quick but cost a lot more next week for all concerned.

Z_Welco mentioned that with synthetic it might leak. Is there any easy fixes for the leak(s)? Or does the trany need to come out and replace all the seals?

If the seals are old and brittle and plugged with sludge and you put clean oil in - it may leak. If you go from 140EP to 70EP it may leak.

If the seals show a 1/4 in band of stuck dust they will not leak from synthetic.
I prefer the 75-140EP because there is no reason to change for the temperature.

As mentioned above another thing a lot of guys do is overfill the tranny by one quart, that is supposed to help the Getrags shift a lot easier. I know several people that it has helped.

Thats WAS true. But not anymore due to the advancement of synthetics.

Try the 1quart over fill (5 quart total) with a good 5w-30 synthetic. I had 339K miles on my original getrag, and switched to Mobile one 5w-30 full syn. and it did wonders. I had the same issue with 5th in mine. It would grind unless u double clutched, or granny shifted. With the 1quart over plus nice new fluid, (u dont wanna know what the old stuff looked like, let alone the 2 quarts that came out looked/smelled like) the difference was amazing!
The tollerance may be wrong, the Getrag is VERY touchy about the correct specs inside the trans.

EEEEEEE The oil for a getrag is synthetic motor oil.

Don't be for putting gear lube in they will not shift in the cold. Maybe not when below operating temp. I did that once :( on an old 3 speed.
