: Engine Rap 6.7
pjsrubicon 07-10-2007, 07:58 PM :HITFAN: :HITFAN: Hey people, 1st time in here, have new 6.7 6 speed auto, 1000 miles developed engine rap few days ago and is going to dealer tomorrow to diagnose, hope it is something minor, anyone else had similar issue? please respond......
thejdman04 07-11-2007, 12:34 AM Good luck w/that, somone told somone who told me, so I dont knwo how true, but a guy ahd a 6.7 w/a nasty knock iin it, took it back to the dealer, tech said its a diesel supposed to be like that, and about 40 miles later something inside came apart had to replace the engine(motor didnt split open and dont knwo what came apart besides, the motor locked up/didnt run wahtever, just heard it had to be replaced, dont know how true.. Im not out here to knock the 6.7 or start a war, jsut a story I heard, maybe cummins had a few get out where something wasnt torqued right???? Like I said im not trying to bash dodge or cummins, they make good engines, one of the top diesels out there right now.
pjsrubicon 07-11-2007, 11:47 PM :feedback Just got truck back from dealer, no diagnose yet on engine rap, other that they can here it, they will run tests next week when i have time to drop it off..............As i was leaving the dealer and got on the highway all of a sudden the engine dropped all power and it sounded like a MAJOR mechanical failure for maybe 5 seconds, i went to pull over and it just came back........like what the f*#K, i just traded my 06 5.9 24k with no issues, i hope i did not make a mistake??????????
thejdman04 07-12-2007, 02:45 AM good lucki, at least the dealer didnt sya" its bad fuel" or we cant hear it, its normal something liek that, hope you get it taken care of
Myguy 07-12-2007, 07:15 PM Rubicon,
Keep us posted on what you find out. My new 6.7 has 2700 miles on it now. Most of the milers were put on towing my 8,000 lb. trailer. I have not experienced any issues. That being said, reading all of these posts on this board has me listening to every rattle and clank that the truck may produce when driving down the road. I'm keeping my fingers crossed as well hoping I didn't make a mistake. Love the truck however!

Tell me about it.......................
cumminspride 07-13-2007, 12:05 AM I'm not sure how true but a buddy of mine's uncle works in coumbus, IN at the cummins plant and he said they halted production for 3 days on the 6.7 cause of poor cranks that failed QC:shrug: . Like i said I don't know how true it is but this wouldn't be something advertised.
AH64Pilot 07-15-2007, 03:21 PM I wouldn't rule out that you got bad gas. My truck did the same thing once when I got $20 worth of gas from a place I'd never been just to make it to work. I noticed that the truck was running a little rougher and bogged down from stoplights. I made it to work ok, and when I went to leave I filled it up with trusted gas from my usual 'close to work' station and all was fine. Lucky I only put $20 in.
I know you're not stupid, but I would only go to 2 maybe 3 trusted places to get your diesel. Make sure it's the green "low sulfer" diesel and stick to those places unless you're out of town. The 6.7 is a great engine so far (6100 miles - first oil change yesterday) but you might have to be a little more picky with what you feed it. Hope this helps!
thejdman04 07-17-2007, 01:24 AM Any news yet
run-amuck 07-17-2007, 01:58 AM yea any news? i've been working on mine today. this noise is driving me nuts because i can't find it. I did try to "phase" the pump today. The book shows to rotate the engine top dead center and put the numbers on the shaft of the pump at the nine oclock position. someone told me that i could just pull the gear loose and turn the shaft 180 degrees so i did. now it is louder and more constant. maybe i went too far maybe i should have only went 20-30 percent. could it be a defective pump? i'm puzzled.
run-amuck 07-17-2007, 02:00 AM my noise came in around 700 miles like pjsrubicon's. maybe the same noise that i'm having?
pjsrubicon 07-17-2007, 03:00 AM Ok, truck still has to go to dealer (next monday) still has some sort of engine rap, im up to 1800 miles and i just got back from a 400 mile trip, good news and bad news...........good.......overhead tells me 19.8 mpg at 65/70 mph unloaded, will hand calc tomorrow when i fuel up, should be around 16 0r 17 mpg, its my best tank yet, others were between 13 and 14( i have checked every truck ive had every tank) Ok bad news..........last 100 miles of trip check engine light came on and 10 minutes later over head says catlyst 80% full, 4 minutes later 100% full, OH SH$T........4 minutes down to 90%......mind you im driving thru Boston, well i make it thru the tunnel (big Dig) and im back to 100% scew it im going all the way to my driveway!!!!!! Oh by the way i cant find my owners manual but i thought ounce at a certain % you need to drive it on highway to clean? i thought thats what i was doing......................oh well i made it home and i will find my book. Thats my story and im sticken to it.:smoke
pjsrubicon 07-17-2007, 03:04 AM my noise came in around 700 miles like pjsrubicon's. maybe the same noise that i'm having?:bow:Mine sound like its comeing from front of engine, it sounds like its in deep but i hope im wrong.... theres a chance it my be bad injector or not fireing right, but the truck seems to have plenty of power.
pjsrubicon 07-17-2007, 03:05 AM Ok, truck still has to go to dealer (next monday) still has some sort of engine rap, im up to 1800 miles and i just got back from a 400 mile trip, good news and bad news...........good.......overhead tells me 19.8 mpg at 65/70 mph unloaded, will hand calc tomorrow when i fuel up, should be around 16 0r 17 mpg, its my best tank yet, others were between 13 and 14( i have checked every truck ive had every tank) Ok bad news..........last 100 miles of trip check engine light came on and 10 minutes later over head says catlyst 80% full, 4 minutes later 100% full, OH SH$T........4 minutes down to 90%......mind you im driving thru Boston, well i make it thru the tunnel (big Dig) and im back to 100% scew it im going all the way to my driveway!!!!!! run-amuck 07-17-2007, 04:06 PM i think you have to drive it over 50-60 mph for 45 minutes to totally clean the dpf hang in there they'll get it fixed..if it puzzles you it's problably hard for them to figure it out..noises in diesels are hard to find. I know I speak from experiance.:damnit
pjsrubicon 07-17-2007, 05:49 PM ok real world highway figures..6.7 4x4 3.73 rears 65 to 75 mph hand calc 17.23 mph, im happy with that.
run-amuck 07-18-2007, 02:59 PM not bad....i fix my noise yesterday. I "phased" the pump according to the book and noise totally gone. someone told me to break the gear loose and rotate the pump shaft 180 degrees and the noise got louder i knew i was in the right spot. so then i said why not do it like the book says? so i did and it fixed it. so when you take yours to the shop tell them they might check into it. it's in the manual under pump replacement.:RTFM:
pjsrubicon 07-27-2007, 02:21 AM ok, after 12 days truck still in shop waiting for DP, by the time it comes in the truck will fall under lemon law, im hoping to get issues resolved because i really like the truck, on the bright side crysler will pay for rental until truck is complete....I WANT MY TRUCK BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mafia
run-amuck 07-27-2007, 10:47 AM are they finding anything out?:poke:
pjsrubicon 07-27-2007, 12:37 PM are they finding anything out?:poke:
Just that it needs a DPF its gonna be a while till they get one, ive told them everything i know from this forum and i think they understand, hopefully after DPF and any updates it will be right.............
run-amuck 07-28-2007, 04:55 PM just hang in there...i know what it's like to be on their side, i'm sure they want your truck fixed as bad as you do. I do know that Chrysler does sometimes has a tough time getting parts...especially on new stuff like the 6.7. did they say the rap was coming from the dpf being stopped up or why does it need the pdf?
thejdman04 07-29-2007, 01:33 AM good luck kee p us up to date
pjsrubicon 07-29-2007, 02:22 AM Got my truck back today, they replaced DPF, did the reflash or updates, the truck seems to be running good with no stumble, but it is still rapping or ticking, it seems to be coming from front of motor. I really do like my truck, my buddy has new ford 6.4, nice truck and he's had no issues after 5000 miles except for a tree that fell on it LOL...... although he was not LOL. i like the cummins set up better............
run-amuck 07-29-2007, 02:50 AM i think some trucks got out of the factory without the high pressure pump being "phased" causing a knocking sound in the front of the engine. There is a procedure for phasing in the service manual. It's real easy.
DodgeRanchin7 07-29-2007, 05:00 AM we have had some engine rap problems along with some engine emission warning lights since we bought it. also the oil change light comes on every 2.000 miles despite light to moderate use. Dodge advertising and manual suggests every 15.000 mile oil change. the dealer has not been able to solve or even diagnose the problem. we are at 5.700 miles.:usflag :mafia

Obviosly my dealer would know what im talkin about when i tell them this? And when u say easy, u mean so easy a caveman can do it.................................And by the way my truck did not make this noise when i drove it of the lot, mabye 500 or so miles before it did..
run-amuck 07-29-2007, 02:01 PM no i mean easy for them to do. when i was told to try this i said that couldn't be the problem....problably cause i didn't want to got through the trouble. if they would just try it. my noise came in about 700 miles.:sly:
