Hello,
I am new to this forum. I was hoping you guys might be able to lend some insight in my latest project idea.
I have a 1998 Ford Explorer 4x4. I want to convert it to diesel. Any idea what is the biggest engine I can fit in there?
I found one guy who put a 3.9 liter Cummins Turbo in a 1992, but I wasn't sure if i could fit a bigger engine in there.
Any insight you have would be much appreciated.
Thanks

It possible to shoehorn the BT5.9 in there but i think it may have to work on the firewall the other issue will crop up is the weight as well the BT3.9 weight in about 700ish lbs while the 5.9 is about 900-1000 lbs i am not sure depending on the set up.
if the number is wrong please correct it here , thanks.
the other issue will may crop is the tranny you may have to rework somehow and yeah you need a adpator for this if you keep the ford automatic.
Merci, Marc

with some work you could probably fit a 6.0 in one

It doesnt have to be big to make good power. The 4BT can make around 400hp fairly easily(but not too cheaply), and that's going to push the Exploder down the road better than any regular 5 litre did.

i'd say no. w/ all the plumbing that comes w/ the 6.0, you can't see the ground when it's in a SD, let alone a mid-sized truck!! :damnit
i think if you do this, a 4bt/3.9 is the best candidate. can be turned up to make that 'ploder move nicely. it's a tall joker, though, and still may not fit easily.
what about the similar Isuzu motors???

Thanks guys
I am looking into the 4bt/3.9. That looks like a decent setup especially if i can get good power out of it.
What tranny would work best with it? I don't think the stock ford transmission would fit.

a lot of them come with turbo 400's out of the frito lay vans, or they have ford 4spds

you'd def. need to do some work to the suspension.... those torsion bar front ends don't like a lot of weight..... but anything is possible.
