OK, I looked at an '06 4door, short bed Dodge Deisel Lariat with a manual trans 4x4.

I can afford this truck  , what i hate is the fuel milage on my Ford 13mpg if I'm lucky. with an auto

Now I would love some HONEST answers on fuel milage with the dodge 6 speed.

Thanks in advance

I get about 16 in town, 18 mixed, and as high as 21 keeping below 2k RPMs...which with a 6spd and 4.10s is about 50mph. But I don't think you can get 4.10s behind the G56 can you??

The guys with the 3.73s seem to be averaging around 20mpg or better on the highway.

The good, the bad and the Ugly........

My truck has never seen a tank avg over 11.99 MPG. Most of my mileage is Innerstate. I've got an auto and 3.73's.

Steve, can you tell me how fast you drive?

Most would say "old man" speed applies to me...I average between 60 and 65 mph on the interstate (any faster and the fuel gauge drops faster than the RPMs climb it seems). I never get in a hurry because of traffic around here and the fact that 4.10s yeild about 2300RPM at 70mph...If I want "the best" mpg I can get...50-55 mph seems to be the trick. Keeping my shifts below 2k RPM also makes a marked difference in mpg...which sucks because you practically get run over driving this way in Philadelphia taffic...

I have an Amsoil filter in a "swiss cheese" box, a [almost] straight 4inch exhaust (turbo back...it is an 2004.5 600CTD), and a RokkTech CPS sensor.

I got my best mileage with around 5k miles on the truck driving flatland of TX (with 4.10s and 245s!!!!!!) at 21mpg...I did average around 16mpg until the Amsoil/RokkTech sensor install...that netted quite a bit right there...exhaust didn't really improve anything...I now have almost 60k on the truck (and 265 tires)...and like I stated, generally around 18 mpg...leaving for ME tomorrow morning with my small trailer (doesn't affect my mileage) so I will get a "long" test of all the mods.

Additionally, I got my absolute best mpg with 315x70R17s bfg's...at 23-24mpg (hand calculated...it dropped my RPMs which caused the increase)..but I had to get rid of them because they were such junk tires (couldn't keep them balanced)...I wish I could find a set of pizza cutters (I ran a 255x85R16 on my 99 and it was great!) for this truck.

Are you hand calculating or going by the overhead??

That was something else that helped mine...take it to the dealer and insist in the TSB "flash" for poor fuel mileage...that was good for about 2 mpg on my truck right there...that was done within a few weeks of my owning it...mine had a hard start issue and the flash was the fix.

Steved, your not the only one who could not keep the 315/70/17 BFG's balanced... I went through 12 of them before the tire shop switched to nittos for me....

Steved, your not the only one who could not keep the 315/70/17 BFG's balanced... I went through 12 of them before the tire shop switched to nittos for me....

When I started with the BFGs, I bought them used for a good price from a guy who had eyes bigger than his truck...when I first put them on they were awesome...within 1000 miles they were out of balance, which powder took care of...then about 2500 miles later they were "out" again...out being out of round. The "best" one was only out 1/2", the others were out up to 3/4 inch...and in a pinch I had to buy new tires (2100 miles from home) and the only thing I could get was a Pirelli in a 265...oh well, at least it doesn't vibrate.

Oh, and these tires had less than 4500 miles total on them when I took them off...they still looked new, but they were definately out of round...I owned my last BFG in anything.

How are the Nittos holding up?

.......Yes, my truck is new and only has 4k on it. But I thought he said HONEST answers? I'd rather have the truth than bogus answers, why lie?

BTW......I don't drive slow and I generally don't fly. I'm between 70 and 85 99% of the time. I drive where I feel comfortable and not by RPM, speed, boost, heat or best MPG. The way I look at it...... I drive this truck, it doesn't drive me. If it doesn't work the way I work..... it's history. :smoke:

I do not have the nittos right now.. I put about 2500 miles on them, and 2 of them went out of round... But they were a very serious mud tire... I was not happy about sounding like an airplane going down the road.

My BFGs were also all out of round... Makes me wonder if the aftermarket ones are not seconds, because I have rode in many Hummers that ride just fine...

Im now looking into Mickey Thompson.

My uncles dodge was horid for the first 13,000... The same as rich's... But he is now a constant 16 mpg...

And just to restate my "real" mileage from this past week...again with a 2500, 4wd, 600CTD, 6spd, 4.10s with only exhaust, RokkTech sensor, and intake mods...I got 19.5mpg driving to Maine towing a trailer that weights around 1,000 pounds...not bad considering the terrain...I got 19.5 consistently (driving I78, I287, I395, I290, and I95) until I got onto Route 9 in Maine...then I dropped to 19mpg.

Got some really crappy fuel (FYI) at the Pilot @ mm132 (I95) in Maine...I attribute that to the "bad" mpg on Route 9...and when I mean crappy fuel...rough idle (talking "cam-like" loping!!!), poor power, VERY noisey engine, very rough feeling when driving, and hard starting.

That was driving normal for me...55 to 60 mph, taking my time...hey, I get paid for travel!!

2005 Auto with some small tuning done. I have gotten 20.4 MPG twice, but only on trips to Salt Lake City. I usually get 17-19 hand calculated doing my everyday drive. Mileage has definently gotten better the more I drive it. I've kept stock tires, and no exterior work. The only changes I have done is engine tuning and it seems like that has made a world of difference for me. I guess some timing really does make a difference.

One question for ya When you are cruising along not excelarating or slowing just rolling along do you have a rattle allmost like the timimg it to far advanced? and when you excelarate the rattle goes away and it gets smooth and all you have is turbo whisle??

I have a tank average of 16.5 and almost all city driveing. Rarely sees freeway unless I want to go down to salt lake or go camping on the weekends. I also get 12 to 12.5 on the freeway pulling my fifthwheel at 65-70 mph down the freeway.

Just as an update...I drove 4200 miles last week...more/less empty, not towing. I averaged, AVERAGED, 18.6mpg for the trip. The per tank high was 23.2mpg, the per tank low was 16.7mpg.

The 16.7mpg was running between 65mph and near redline (around 85+mph) for the better part of 450 miles (trying to get ahead of those bad storms and tornados in TX/OK). The 23mpg was the first leg of the trip...probably a fluke and a result of too much additive (I had some oddball bottles laying around).

The general average per tank was around 20mpg...this was cruising a conservative 65mph with the front tires at 70psi and the rears at 65psi (the OE bfg's seem to get softer with more miles)...I will also note that I had over 10k miles on the oil (Rotella T 15w40 CI-4+) when I pulled into home...

I am happy to report that I got no water in my fuel during the trip...and I did note the fuel in the tank is excessively warm after cruising for several hundred miles (return line from the injectors/CP3??). I was getting loads of water this winter...must be a refinery thing??
