im going to be buying a new class 7 truck this week im going to be geting a freightliner single axle from ryder what motor should i get c13, cat c15 cat, or the 12.7 detroit and why.

Im going to be pulling a 53ft step deck doing oilfild going to be pulling about 30,000lbs and the trailer is 13,000lbs I do oil field hot shot loads

what would be the best mpg? the detroits come with 3.91 gears and the rest have 3.73 all have 22.5's
the detroits have 410hp

the c13 has 380hp

the c15 435hp

thay all have eaton 10 speeds

With those choices, and the C15 being a 435, and assuming you're gonna buy it and drive it not put any extra money into the motor to make it decent, just get the Detroit with the lowest manometer reading and cleanest (ash/ acids/ particulates) oil sample at 10K, put tall rubber on it, and run it. The C13 sux, and the 435's, even late ones, suk. That leaves the green machines... :)

i can get a real good deal on one with the C13-410hp

im going to just drive it and hope it will last im only plated for 54,999 so my loads are light my truck now has 330hp M11 cummins with a 9speed has way more power than i need just time for a newer truck

MPG will depend the most on your driving habits, with that being said motor wise I think you will get the best mpg (driving habits aside), out of the detroit. The other big thing is that cat is a lot more proud of their parts should you ever have anything go wrong vs the Detroit.

that is what everyone has told me im in houston,TX and there is cat dealers everyware i just do not know any one that works on detroit my guy said he did not know of a just detroit dealer cummins and cat has them and only work on motors thats really the only thing im scared of

I have read up on the C13 for what my guy said that is a very powerfull motor and is light weight and has a B50 life but dont understand all that if i was going to a full rig i would go the C15 but im only doing light loads and dead heading alote and can get this truck for $4,000 less than the detroit

In Houston,Tx. you have Stewart and Stevenson that works on Detroits. They likely have a bigger stock of engines and parts than the factory does. They have one location on the north side of I-10 across from the Budwieser plant.I have also been to a S&S in Harvey La.

They are both mid-life ACERTS. That's all that counts if you don't wanna spend more money after you buy it. :(

FWIW. If I were you I would get the Detroit. they do have some EGR issues but pretty easy fixes. I have a C 15 Acert and love it NOW . after some problems, alot of education and some mods. it was a great disappointment when stock. seems the Cat dealers dont know how to make them run right and end up throwing expensive parts at them only to have them still run poorly. Ive heard more bad on Acerts than good. if you havent heard them too, your not listening.. buy the Detroit

My 12.7 Detroit was the best long term engine I've owned to date, never a major problem in over 2 million miles and the older it got the better fuel mileage it got. Last print out from Landstar showed it at over 7mpg average for 90 days. Good Luck with yours!
