Hi i was wondering what made the 2003 turbos so loud is it the 10 vane wheel or is it somthing else. If it is just the wheel could you replace the 13 vane wheel on the newer style turbo for the older 10 vane wheel. Was just wondering what the differance was the made the 2003 turbos whisle so loud.

Yea it is the 10 vane wheel it moves a lot more air than the 13 or 15 vane turbos. The wheels can be changed like you are talking about. I prefer the sound of the 10 vane in my 03 over the others.

If the vanes are changable, what would the part number be and where would I get it?

The 2003 model trucks were the only trucks that came out with the 10 vane turbos, when i said 03 in my previous post i was talking about the year model of my truck.

Vanes inside a turbocharger control the acceleration of gases inside the turbo and thus the speed at which the turbocharger itself can accelerate the compressor and produce boost. Tight vanes produce a quick spooling turbo with little lag but one that can quickly choke the engine at higher speeds. This is because the engine is trying to push to much exhaust through the turbo and the vanes are constricting it. Wider spaced vanes can allow a turbo to have more top end capability but at the expense of spool time (otherwise known as turbo lag).

The vanes are not changeable. I mentioned in my previous post 10 vane "wheel" and i didn't mean to call the vanes a wheel.

So is there any down fall of the 10 van turbo other than more lag?

#7 ·
The early '04's with the '03 engine also had 10 blades on the wheel.

Your exactly right Lilpooh. Don't know why people still get mixed up about the "vanes" and the "blades". I'll say it again for all the members that misunderstand the turbo.

1. Vanes, all the stock 6.0 turbos and even my powermax turbo, have 9-variable vanes or gates that control the flow of the exhaust gasses on the exhaust turbine wheel.

2. Blades, 10-blades, 13-blades, 15-blades, however many blades, they are on the intake compressor wheel.

The whistle is from the intake air flow past the blades.

I don't know i got a turbo and pedestol off of a 2003 f-250 and it has the 10 exhaust vanes and I am rebuilding it and when i ordered the rebuild kit for the 2003 none of the bearings or sleaves fit they were for a smaller shaft turbo so i talket to them and they said that i have the newer late 2004 turbo and i need that kit so i got that kit and everthing fits right and was wondering if maby sombody took a newer turbo and installed the 10 vane wheel but i guess they did not becuse it has the 2003 and early 2004 pedestol mount so i am not sure what the deal is with it but we will see when i get it on my truck.

Also should i pop out the silincer ring and will it make a differance?

#14 ·
you can remove the silencer ring but it doesnt make that big of a difference. with a stock intake you dont really hear it too much. an aftermarket intake will help but with an 03 turbo you get plenty of whistle already.

Yea I have a air aid intake and was wondering if j should remove the silence rig is there any negative affect on removing it.

The later turbos move MORE AIR than the early turbos and do it more efficiently. Many people like the "whistle" of the early 10 blade turbos and retro fit them. Do not be fooled, they DO NOT move more air than the later turbos.

air movement is measure in #/min not psi, more boost does not mean more flow.

#17 ·
So the 10 vane turbo gives more boost will that cause more cyl pressure and possabley blow head gaskets easer and if so is that why ford went to teh 13 vane turbo to lower boost and cyl pressure?

#18 ·
Where is the silencer ring at in the turbo. I have an 04 turbo, I can't remember how many vanes it has, I'll crack her open tomorrow. Also has anyone ever just removed 3 vanes from the 13 vane, take them out at even points

That might be the dumbest idea I have ever heard. If you wanna blow up your turbo and your motor, go for it.

The 13 blade is more efficient and quieter, both things most OEMs strive for.

Excellent video, I appreciate the helpful comments. I'm guessing no one has had problems with cutting off the silencer ring? It sounds like a pretty good mod

I have not heard of anything and have not done it yet was kinda wondering the same thing. I just got done rebuilding my 2003 10 vane turbo and was wondering if i shoulc pop out the ring or not.

#26 ·
I don't know, after watching the video it looks like quite the hack job to me. Completely cuts off the lip for sealing properly. It seems to me one could just drill a bunch of holes all the way around the silencer ring without damaging or eliminating the intake lip and basically achieve the same thing. Just a thought.

My thoughts exactly. Could take a die grinder and do a better job.

I cleaned mine up alot better than the guy in video, I actually used a cutoff wheel cut the ring and smoothed the edges for a clean look. I figured loosing the lip wont be so bad because of it being inward flow, so as long as the intake was sturdy you shouldnt see a problem.
Unfortunately I havent had a chance to hear it as the motor is apart for egr and oil cooler replacement, hopefully Ill have it all back together within a couple days if I have time. Right now Im soaking the intake in an acid/degreaser bath trying to get that oil out from before I did the ccv mod.

#30 ·
Good deal let us know how it sounds when you get it back together.

#33 ·
Yea there are better and cleaner ways to do it.

#35 ·
Hay I see that you have a 03 with silence ring removed did it man any differences on how it sounds or performs should I do it to my 03 turbo before I put it on:soapbox

#37 ·
Well I got my truck back together with silencer ring cut off, if ur turbo is out then such go for it, but I def wouldn't bother if u have no other reason to take turbo off. Mild difference, an it's only at certain throttle points. If I didn't have truck aPart for oil cooler I wouldn't have bothered

Ok now after driving for a bit without the wife in the truck I got to play a little, the turbo is def louder than it was before, sounds dang cool. I have the 13 blade 04 turbo that wasnt all that loud before. Im sure if you have a 03 you wont notice a difference over that loud whistle, but still I wouldnt take the turbo off just to do this mod.
