hey everyone I opened my big mouth on the white smoke thread now my truck is losing coolant. So I just ordered the 6.0 solution kit with egr cooler upgrade from sinister diesel. I could find the threads with search I know theres tons of them on here though. Can anyone give me the process run down of tear down on the 6.0 for taking the heads off. any tips are helpful also what are your thoughs truck never over heated or anything and get 15 mpg around town should I send the heads out somewhere to get checked out any idea on cost. I'm almost tapped out just buying the kit to fix the truck but I need to get it fixxed gonna start tear down tonight after work. thanks for any help.

I've never seen a write-up on head removal, but here is a link for the parts your gonna need.http://www.thedieselgarage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65320

You really should send the heads out to be checked. I paid $350 for them to be checked for flatness, maganfluxed for cracks, and pressure tested. this price also included milling off .006" of the heads and new valve guilds.

yeah don't know if you've seen them but sinister diesel has a 6.0 solution kit that has every thing you need for parts for the whole kit studs, gaskets, oil cooler, egr cooler upgrade it came to $1383. I though that would probly be the best priced way to go. thanks for info

why are you taking the heads off ?? it could be the egr cooler alone

well I figure better safe then sorry I see a alot of what ifs. what if it is just the cooler, what if its cause some kind of damage to the head gaskets, what if the oil cooler is pluged up which caused the egr cooler to have problems. see where im going with this. even though it will take me more time and money to fix my truck i'd rather just tear into it once and have that be the end of it.
So does anyone have any tips for this tear down or know where theres a step by step tear down??????

:thinking

theres plenty of testing that you can perform before tearing the motor down.

monitor the temperature differential of the ECT & EOT.
test the coolant for combustion gases.
run a compression test.

the 6.0s blow far fewer head gaskets that people think.

if your blowing coolant out the degas bottle or loosing it out the bottle then you have blown headgaskets... I have yet to seen a bad cooler blow coolant out the degas tank.... If you are loosing it and you see white smoke and coolant is in the intake then you have a blown EGR cooler... I would check EOT and ECT to see if you need an oil cooler also.

...its POSSIBLE but certainly no confirmation !

if anything he's more likely to be FLASH BOILING the coolant which is
returned to the degas bottle via the rubber hose thats connected
between the two !

either way i'd rather just fix the truck once say it is just the cooler then next year im towing my trailer and tractor either to or from mass which i have plans to do in the spring and then the head bolts stretch and now the gaskets are blown i'd have to take all the same parts back off again besides I think it was cheaper to get every thing as a kit rather than one at a time. instead of trying to tell me what part of the engine is blown could some one please give me some tips on pulling it apart would you guys get the heads check also any good places to send them to?? Do I have to take the injectors out?? whats the best way to lift the head is there a spot for lifting on them or something??? thanks much

Pretty sure its a torque sequence, i know on my head bolts i needed to torque all bolts to 37ftlbs then again to 59ftlbs, then another 60* and then another 60*, but im not sure what the ARP's are, you could check with ARP to see if they have a sequence chart and the procedure:happymugs

hey also i've read a few article in diesel power about the oil rails that go to the injectors should I replace any of the seals also I think pre 06 there is no check valve bolt of some kind that keeps presure on the oil rail what is that should I go to dealer to see if they have them If i remeber its got something to do with making the truck take less cranking to start or something like that.

any info on what you mean by updated one would be great also any idea of part numbers or something I just vaguely remeber reading something about it I'm not even sure where they are one the oil rail.

Not sure if we all read the list of parts from the Chris's list, but im sure i seen "studs" and "head gaskets". Thats next for my truck, its like buying insurance.

Started to tear into it tonight after work had to clean out my snowmobile projects so i'd have room to put most of the truck in the garage.lol I think I did ok for only working on it for between 2 to 3 hours seeing how ive never torn one of these 6.0 's down

the elbow is all I had on it until last weekend. Last weekend when I relised the coolant was low and that was probly why I saw white smoke out the tail pipe a couple times last week. Last weekend I put in a fuel presure gauge egt gauge a boost gauge and a banks six gun with speed loader. I figure the reason for the engine problem is because its a 6.0 if it was a great engine ford and international would probly still be doing business with each other.lol :night

ok guys i've heard about you all having problems with the back three head bolts next o the heater box. I cant even get the ratchet with socket in there can someone please find who ever though it was ok to put a heater box a inch and half away from a head and give them a big boot in the ace for me please. So whats the best way to get them ive heard of some of you say move the trans over and some of you say remove the heater box. Whats the best option. does the whole heater box have to come out or does the head side come apart from the rest of the assembly. the trans option whats gotta be done I looked at the cross member that does'nt look to bad looks like i'll have to disconnect the 4x4 shift lever. anything else??????? Thanks guys

:shrugs Ive heard people lifting the cab via cab mounts on right side. I havent looked into it yet, but might be worth a look.

hmm :thinking I wish I had more time to work on it today gonna head out now for couple hours but then I gotta get headed down to mass my aunts are letting me use there truck for a couple weeks till I finish fixxing mine. To be honest though every time I work on the truck I get magor head aches just amazes me that they build trucks now that are such pita's to work on. I'll look at the cab mounts but I think I like that trans idea the only thing I gotta watch out for is the 4x4 shift level the crossmember is even designed to drop down and away from the passengers side. thanks for the info though i'll take a look at it but it would seem you would have to lift the cab allot to get enough space. thanks again
