cat c13 engine problems

Have a c13 2004 serial KCB in the shop running smooth but a lot of blowby.Just started to push dipstick about 8 inches out of tube followed by the oil.Pushes the dipstick only after a long pull under full boost.Going to check turbos for leaking into the crankcase.Engine has high 300,000 on it.Driver said he's been adding antifreeze but no leaks and nothing in the oil.Also oil pressure dropped by 10#s today.Normally at 40 psi at idle now 30 when hot.Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.I'm probably looking at top ring problems but oil pressure and antifreeze doesn't add up.

Pressure testing the turbo compressor, is a good idea, and preasure testing the intake of the engine will test the valve guides. 35 lbs, You can check the oil filter for metal, both aluminum and steel. You can remove the oil pan and look up to see if a cylinder is scuffed, and metal on the oil pan drain plug magnet. You can pull the injectors and with the piston at the top and bottom check for cylinder leak down. If the cylinder has scuffed it is possible the oil pump is torn up, it is also possible the oil filter is compromised. If there is a lot of metal, the oil cooler should be changed.

Test the radiator cap, that could be the coolant loss, inspect the air intake, and with the pan off preasure testing is a great idea. as normal tony.

La première baisse de chose la casserole pétrolière fait alors pression en haut sur le système de liquide de refroidissement je parie vous que vous trouverez une fuite quelque part si pas le joint alors principal est à peu près fait pour cela.

Si vous avez l'entretoise d'alun l'abandonnent et obtiennent acier verison s'ils l'ont toujours.
{ Ynot pouvez-vous vérifier si cette série peut toujours obtenir l'assiette d'entretoise d'acier ?}

Je pense que votre moteur est allready épousseté ainsi chèque le turbocompresseur pour n'importe quels dégâts j'ai un sentiment le turbo est sur la dernière jambe et regarder le logement de filtre à air et le filtre à air lui-même et voir ce qui se passe.


First thing drop the oil pan then pressure up the coolant system I bet you that you will find a leak somewhere if not then head gasket is pretty much done for it.

If you have alum spacer ditch it and get steel verison if they still have it.
{Ynot can you verify if this series still can get steel spacer plate ? }

I think your engine is allready dusted so check the turbocharger for any damage I have a feeling the turbo is on the last leg and look at the air filter housing and air filter itself and see what is going on.

Drop the pan, ive seen head bolts stretch on these causing internal loss of coolant. The head bolts are one time use.

no spacer plate on these series it uses a metal head gasket.

min oil pressure at 1800 rpm @ operating temp is 40 to 60 psi, 10 psi min at idle. They updated the oil pressure mapping for these engines to with a software change here a few months back.

Cela assez instering mais une voie que vous pouvez dire si l'huile d'attraction de compresseur passe comme un éclair alors vous le sait à peu près fait pour cela.


That pretty instering but one way you can tell if the compressor side show oil streak then you know it pretty much done for it.

Très simple.,

Le chapeau du turbocompresseur et mis un mandrin aérien et gonfle la pression et si se tiennent toujours alors vous savez que le phoque est ok comme longtemps vous ne voyez pas de bandes pétrolières consommation ou épuisez le côté.

Mais une fois que vous créez la pression et le tenez stabilisent environ 35 PSIG qu'excellent cependant si la baisse en bas assez vite alors vous savez que le phoque est fait pour cela.



Very simple .,

Cap off the turbocharger and put a air chuck and inflate the pressure and if still hold then you know the seal are ok as long you don't see oil streaks either intake or exhaust side.

But once you build up pressure and hold it steady about 35 PSIG that fine however if drop down pretty fast then you know the seal is done for it.

How I do the turbo test is to use the plastic covers you get when you buy a new turbo, or a brake diaphragm works, then pressurise, I disconnect the drain tube and if you get any preasure the turbo fails.

I have replaced a lot of turbo's for passing air into the crankcase never had one passing exhaust, only the intake side.

What I do is put in an adapter into the turbo outlet conection, and pressurize the complete system. You can then soap test every conection intake manifold and cover plate you can look at the cab boost gauge, and check if it is correctly calibrated, you can hook up the scanner and check the Boost preasure sensor and it's readout. You can check the vent tube and see how much blow by you have. You can remove the valve cover, and use a cigarette, I had a package of punks you get to light fireworks, to see which valves seals and guides are leaking. Or use a small hose to you ear and listen for the air leaking. Put it down the oil drain holes and listen for air past the rings.
Just a thought!

It gives you a visual aid, the smoke will distort and blow away from the air movement. It works in a noisy shop environment, you can also spray your hands with soapy water and feel the cooling effect.
