1997 powerstroke mods?

I thought I had a thread started about this but I must have misplaced it.

Ok, I just bought a 97 PSD with 314,xxx miles. It was a work truck for the company I used to work for and I put the last 60,xxxish miles on it. The trans has been reworked with a bilet 3 dics TQ, huge cooler and a shift kit, not sure of the brand. It had an old Bully Dog 4-position chip until the old computer went out. It is all stock right now and I want to do some SAFE upgrades.

Keep in mind that this truck has over 300,000 miles.

I found a Beans quick-spool housing and wixked wheel for $150. Good upgrade? I did search this and heard good things.

Exhaust is obvious. Stock down pipe is a joke:haha Found a nice 4" for around $300. This i am doing regardless.

Ts Performance 6-position chip. Nothing major.

The K&N is going in the trash can ASAP. Since my compressor wheel is getting crewed up. Getting the Tymar? intake kit.

Now, I want to do injectors later on, Probably just the Rosewood Stage 1's So I am going to keep my old 1.15 housing for that. right?

Water-to-air intercooler with SD intake plenums. Later.....

Water/meth injection fo' sho!

Not too sure what else after that. I want to keep this truck alive. I dont haul a super heavy load only around 20k but not often. I want to gain a few mpg's as well. I am only getting around 14 on the highway(above 2000rpm) Below 2000 I get very good milage, around 17.

What about a HPOP? I have read alittle about swapping a SD pump in for alittle extra, but I need injectors for that right? Also, what about the SD exhaust manifolds?

Thanks for any help.

First of all, the wicked wheel is no upgrade to you. It is the same wheel that is in your turbo, and it is sold to be put in the super duty turbo's to help stop turbo surging. you also mentioned that you were looking at the quick spool housing, which is the 1" housing. you also mentioned that you wanted to keep the 1.15" stock housing because you were looking into some stage 1's. I have read on many times (i have no exp with this) that people run stage 1's with the quick spool housing and it is a very nice combination. I have heard nothing but good from people with the Tyamar, but you can also make your own with a Napa 6637 or equivalent, some 4" diameter pipe and a bank clamp. Any custom burnt chip with a good Tow tune is gonna do just fine for you. Do yourself a favor and do some research by using the search tool on what tuner to get. don't start a thread, because it will turn into a pissing match. Just get what ever YOU want, and run what tuner YOU feel is the best. As far as the the HPOP, it depends on the condition of your stock 15* HPOP, on weather you will be able to run stage 1's with it or not, but a 17* one from a super duty would be an improvement

Now you also say that the truck has the stock exhaust, a K&N intake, bullydog, and 300K+ miles? and it tows a lot quite often? In my personal opinion, I would think about it for a few weeks or longer before i decide if i wanted to dump all this money into the truck. But whatever you decided to do, keep us updated, and dont' be afraid to ask any question

It does have 300K+ miles but still runs like a dream. I am not going to dump a huge amount of $$$ into it. The mods I am going to do can be easily removed and sold if the truck takes a dump. I want to rebuild the engine later aswell, after it loses power. What is the easy way to tell if the HPOP is strong enough? Will the TS chip agree with the stage 1's? If it isnt going to work good then I will buy the programmable chip so I can get the right programs. Who is the best programmable? I have looked into a few but that was a month or so agao and forgot the ones I looked at.

1997 Upgrades...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found a Beans quick-spool housing and wixked wheel for $150. Good upgrade? I did search this and heard good things. ANSWER: If you are going to go bigger injectors waste of your money. Save the money and put it towards injectors

Exhaust is obvious. Stock down pipe is a joke Found a nice 4" for around $300. This i am doing regardless. ANSWER: Very good idea. Who makes this kit?

Ts Performance 6-position chip. Nothing major. ANSWER: Get a custom tuned chip you will be MUCH happier in the long run

The K&N is going in the trash can ASAP. Since my compressor wheel is getting crewed up. Getting the Tymar? intake kit. ANSWER: TYMAR style kit def the way to go. We sell one for $125 shipped

Now, I want to do injectors later on, Probably just the Rosewood Stage 1's So I am going to keep my old 1.15 housing for that. right? ANSWER: Good choice on injectors. We sell the Rosewood Stage I's. Also Swamp, and Full Force

Water-to-air intercooler with SD intake plenums. Later.....

Water/meth injection fo' sho! ANSWER: Only really needed if your towing heavy, racing, or sled pulling Intercooler from a superduty is much better

What about a HPOP? I have read alittle about swapping a SD pump in for alittle extra, but I need injectors for that right? Also, what about the SD exhaust manifolds? ANSWER: Superduty pump is a very good idea it will make the truck perform better even without the injectors

Thanks,
Paul@Complete

I pasted this so that anyone else asking these same questions can get these answer also.

The old Bully Dog is no longer in the truck since to old computer was replaced at about 190,000.

The reason I am going to go with the water-to-air intercooler is a have no room for a front mount air-to-air cooler. And I dont want to cut the radiator support up to install it. Mostly I have no room for it due to the huge trans cooler.

I may go ahead and do the quick spool and wicked wheel since it is a good price and the injectors will be awhile down the road. I know the wicked wheel is the same wheel I have but my wheel is pretty beat up.

What about the SD exhaust manifolds? I heard they are better, worth it?

Thanks for the advice so far. Very help full.

Oh, the exhaust I am looking at is a Diamond Eye 4"

Ok, bought the beans housing and a new compresser wheel. Ordered a 4" mbrp exhaust today. Now, I am thinking of ordering the TS chip for now and then selling it when I do the rest of the upgrades and buy a DP. They have TS chips on sale right now for $230. A friend of mine has the same truck as me and he wants it when I get the DP.

Got my Tymar filter today. Didnt fit the best but a very good deal on a good filter. I'll have to make alittle different adapter pipe with a bend in it to get the filter off the master cylinder and the battery. Other then that, it's all good. Like the outerwear too!

I also got my exhaust and intercooler a few days ago. Havent installed either of those yet but I will *** soon as the turbo gaskets and such get here.

I'll let you know how everything works out.

By the way, Thanks Complete Performance for the filter kit. You'll be hearing from me soon on that chip!
