and it SUCKED!!!!
so i break out the manual and run through the procedure just to make sure i understood about the 1/4 turn drain plug and it was extremely straight-forward.
so i got my 15qt drain pan and ratchet+extension and went in on the creeper. used the ratchet and loosened the plug (which is actually a little more than a 1/4 turn; it says 120° on the plug).
here's where disaster struck: using the extension, i pulled the drain plug all the way out. dude - a solid, 1"+ stream of oil shot out of the pan and over-shot the drain pan by at least a foot. so i quickly grabbed the pan and scoot it under the impact zone of the oil geiser. then i quickly observed the drain pan become totally overwhelmed by the amount of oil input. it isn't that it seemed like the crankcase was under pressure, but that the oil drain opening allows for a huge volume of oil to free-flow out very rapidly.
i had to stick the ratchet w/ plug back into the oil pan to stem the oil flow. i had to keep the plug/ratchet in the oil pan opening to throttle the draining oil to a managable level so it did not continue to overwhelm the drain pan. i was basically covered in oil. it must have looked like i've never changed oil before in my life.
but it gets better - so i loosen the filter, and as i expected, oil starts flowing down the sides of the filter. so i wait. and wait. and wait. finally, i grab the filter and twist if off the few remaining threads. as expected, i dumped the full filter into the drain pan. what i didn't expect, was what seemed like another 1/2 of a quart continued to poor out of the oil filter adapter. i caught it in the drain pan, no biggie, just didn't expect it.
what was aggrivating though is that the oil filter housing continued to drain. and drain. and drain. and basically never stopped draining. so i finally stuck the new filter up there and ran it up snug as quickly as i could. but with all the dripping oil, the out side rim of the new filter was filled up w/ oil - i had to wipe down the new filter several times over the new few minutes to keep the filter clean-ish.
alright, here's the point to my whining: i am extremely disappointed at the oil change process coming from the 6.0, where you could change oil in your Sunday best and stay clean doing it. i feel like FoMoCo really screwed the pooch by straying from International's method in this arena. hopefully i don't have to do this too often with the oil life monitoring.
basically, changing the oil in my truck is now about as elegant as chitting the bed - there really isn't any 'class' involved and you can't do it w/ out getting messy.
just wanted to give you all a heads-up before you get pissed on in your driveway, too. :swear
