Opinions ? - Benz L6, 12.8L

Any thought or Opinions on the Benz 12.8L ?

Im looking at a renegade coach that is built on a Freightliner Columbia chasis
and uses a 12.8L (450hp) w/ an AutoShift 13 speed UltraShift (large paddle,
turn signal stalk style).

Any thoughts or known history w/ these Engines & Transmissions ??

IMO they are ok but the parts are expensive on Benz diesel engines somecase it may have backlogged for parts but most case they are allright to me.

Service life on the engine what I heard they can go anywhere 800K to 1M miles before you do anything major repairs on it.

Merci.
Marc

are fleet has 3 of these engines. We are lucky to get 400,000 miles out of one before they need replaced. The heads start to move and screw up the block. My friend that works at the local detriot dealer has been doing 4000 series engine swing for the past few months. Check to see if there is any leaking coolant from the head gasket on the right side of the engine behind the turbo. If there is run from it!

Im currently running 2 of these engines in Sterling trucks, and have had no problems with them at all, although they are both young still, 250,000kms and 140,000kms, i run at 45ton with them.

My only complaint would be that they are a bit "lazy" and dont like to move in a hurry.

Once moving they hold on ok.

Mine are both set at 450hp and 1550ftlb, and when i say lazy, my ISM cummins's set at 425hp and 1450ftlb walk away from them, and accelerate much quicker.

I do get good fuel economy with them though, and i average 3kmlt+ around the city with them all day long in stop-start traffic.

well i lost the opportunity on the one and came across another...double rear axle,
cant say i trust the seller...he's come off VERY VERY grease in his communications,
photos and "dealings"

i continue to look & feel a bit more comfortable w/ the engine & tranny...in a motor coach
ill NEVER stress the motor (other than via my heavy foot) like it was intended to be
run so i think ill be ok...the insurance and labor rate on these coaches is considerably
less than a pusher bus...just need to drive one so i can compare for comfort and noise.

i figure the air ride seats will be a welcome advantage in these coaches (renegade or
haulmark) over conventional <non air> seats in a pusher bus/coach
