oil pressure & temp

I'm stalling low oil pressure and temperature gauges on my truck and was wondering if I could drill and tap the casting blank that is located behind the factory oil pressure sending unit on the upper oil cooler housing? See the pics. It appears on the back side that it is in the same oil passage as the factor sending unit. Just wondering if I will run into any problems? Thanks

Just tee off of the sending unit for the oil temp. That is what I did for my oil pressure gauge.

Does anyone know which fitting is needed to T off the factory oil temp. I want to run an actual oil temp an oil pressure gauge as well.

you need one #4 o-ring male to 1/8 NPT male adapter, one 1/8 male to #4 o-ring female adapter, then you need a 1/8 NPT female T, from there you can do whatever fittings you need to make it work for your gauge. Here is the link for where I got the info from. The o-ring fittings are available from most any hydraulic shops.

Thanks for the help.
I'm still stuck on drilling at taping the housing. If anyone has experience in this let me know.

The main reason I wouldn't do it is because the NPT thread would cause a bit of stress on that cast aluminum housing. You would have to be very cautious about how tight you put it to keep the housing from cracking. Unless you use an o-ring based fitting to adapt to the gauge sensor. That is just my .02 on drilling and tapping it.

I dont think it would cause any problems. i would use a small piece of hose from the drilled port to the sending unit to damper any vibrations.

Usually when there are factory threads the casting is a little thicker in that area. You may not have much material where you intend to tap. Just a word of caution.

That casting is pretty thick there, I'm pretty sure it could hold up to tapping.
It almost appears that the blind hole could be used in other applications and that is purpose of casting it in the housing.

Bill, I'm concerned about a false temp reading when using a hose. Not sure what kind of affect it would have.
