You've never seen a properly tuned K run then. I can say without a doubt a K tuned to run, will put 1000 hp to the tires. You'd be lucky to get 800 to the tires with the 3408. I've seen K's turn 3500 + rpm at truck pulls year after year and not be rebuilt. I'm a CAT person when it comes to the electronic engines, but CAT never built anything mechanical for a truck that can hold up to the K in the long run.

Either of these motors isn't worth the time and effort to run in a truck today. They weigh too much and don't get the best fuel mileage. An electronic CAT will be as strong as the K, be stronger than the 3408, work and survive much longer and use alot less fuel doing it.

I worked On Heaths '08 at Diedre when I still lived in Texas...
Anyway, for big diesels in-lines will always build more torq by design only. Torq is HP at the R's we run. V's can't do it, (even if you offset the rods). Tho they both have the same cubes, the 08 will outlast the K by 5, but they K will out pull it every time. Just the design and equating volumetric efficiency. The floating heads and actual structure is a joke, tho necessary to repair in an army tank or whatever. A one piece head like some pullers run strengthens the whole deal, by about 150%. If the 3500 series made an in-line, K's would be toast.

Thats the man right there a true trucking legend. I had a "hot" 1693 back then had quite a bit of power it would wear the drive tires down on a hard pull but most 1693 would they were almost bulletproof. Trucking was fun back then when there was a power war between the 12v71 the KTA 19 and the 3408 Cat and nothing I saw would run like those big ole Cats could and were alot more reliable than anything on the road. We could pass anything but a truckstop lol back when we thought 3 MPG was good lol.

I,m loving the reminiscing,. i had a 3408 in a 79 pete, rack was twisted in it,.had a 15 over with a 4 speed brownie,.
("60 speed" i used to tell the yankees,.) but it had stiff competion with the big kta's,.. a company called porter had some brokers with k100's that used to run 'em hauling 'a' boxes here in canada,.
i,m a little confused tho,. i,d like to know the math on the gearing and rpm to run 130 mph,..
even 100mph is pretty good,. i had another pete a few years later with a b model and it had an 8 speed with 3:90's and big rubber,..
the k100 i had had a 12v71,. it had n80's in it and had a bhasterdized 13 double over, and was fast and mean sounding with an empty flatdeck

According to my math, if you were running tall 24.5 rubber with 3.55 rears and had a .62 overdrive you would have to be turning 2200 rpm and that would get you about 132mph.

With todays 3.36s and 3.23s it is a little more realistic.

Most of the trucks 'backthen' were always 4;11' and slower,.never heard of 3:55's, the old 2 stroke jokes always had 4'44's or better,. 4:63 was real common,.

Yep and it's still hard to get the old guys convinced they no longer need the low gears. My uncle totally screwed up a truck, 1990 T600 with "B" Cat, 15spd and 3:70's on the lot brand new. Had the gears switched to 4:88's without driving it, you could crawl faster than it would go in low and maxed out at about 74mph. Would pull like a bulldozer but worthless on the highway, he no longer orders trucks (mine has 3:36's)
