3406E oil pressure flutter

Ok, 1996 5Ek 3406E. Oil pressure cold is 60psi, hot it is 35psi.
When cruising 1400-up the oil pressure holds 58 psi.
When hauling/pulling/lugging the oil pressure fluctuates slightly from 53-55 psi.
I noticed three times today that when idling hot the oil pressure was fluttering between 35-40 psi. I have done some searching on the net and the only thing that I could come up with was either a worn oil pump, or debri in the releif valve.

Any other thoughts? Is this normal for an "E" model. I have very little experience with them. Almost all of my experience is with 3406b's or those POS 2005 465 Volvo motors.

Would getting the "upgraded" relief valve for the pump be worthwhile?

On a side note, the motor seems to pound while running down the road, atleast compared to a "B" model. I just don't know what to expect from this thing due to my lack of experience with them. Damned thing just sounds to tinny.

On a different note, the motor seems to pound when running down the road, atleast compared to a "B" model. I just don't know what these should run/sound/act like due to my lack of experience with them. Damned thing just sounds so tinny.

I had 2 5EK's, and one of my customers had 4 that when hot, idled at 25, and only made 45-50 on the highway. The factory pump had aluminum back plates in which all were grooved up. A new pump with the cast iron plate fixed the problems on all of them. Idle at 40-42 and 60-65 on highway.

What about the fluttering pressuree though? Is that the pump, or the relief valve?

It's the pump because the worn end plate is letting the oil bypass from the pressure side of the pump to the suction side thus causing the pressure fluctuation. As sled said they updated the pumps with cast iron end plates.

Lots of gauges need a restrictor to remove the pulsations from the line.
I would be installing a manual oil filled gauge in the system to be looking, It is a gear pump and is just a continual flow of pulses.
I would put in a manual gauge oil filled to see. If it is leakage past the end plates it would be continual leakage not going up and down, A two pound fluctuation is not a problem, Cat in the C15 manual says a fluctuation of 10 lbs should be looked at below that they are not worried. The ones I can remember that had oil pressure fluctuations most were a lot better when the oil filter was changed.
The minimum pressure above 1200 RPM loaded is 40. and 15 at Idle.
If you have access to a program the last line on the Parameters is the oil pan level.
Just a thought!
