Future of the 4500/5500

Yes, I know it's no longer produced.
Sad to say the least. More like a travesty to me because I once again borrowed my friends and I have never been so impressed with a small truck. It will turn circles inside of the 450 I used to own and the visibility is outstanding. Laid-out better than most vocational medium duties and overbuilt the way I like compared to Ford.

With all that said, hated to see it go. I wondered if there was any way isuzu or someone else would ever pick up the tooling from GM and make a go of it with these fantastic little trucks and bring them back.

Local GMC dealer says he has at least a dozen customers scrambling around buying all the used ones they can find for their fleets.

What's the truck of the week this week? Maybe a Mahindra?

The reason they went away coincides with the gov't taking them over. I spoke with the owner of my local GM medium duty dealer and he said the gov't forced GM to stop producing anything they could cut loose that was low profit/high fuel consumption and MD trucks are low profit.

From the looks of their article, it looks like they're going to re-enter. choppingwood

Duke- I agree. I love my '97 topkick I know it is not as refined as the 01-09, but it is a great truck to dive and get in and out of places with.

I haul hay to Cap Cod (the arm of Mass.) I pull my topkick in and and out little horse farms off of small one and half lane roads with ease. My '00 F550 has a 30" shorter wheel base and there is 5 or 6 places I can not get the F550 into, that I get the topkick into. I love how the front wheels turn like 70 degrees.

I have tough many of the farm kids (mostly girls) how to drive (with and with out trailers) with this truck over the past 6 years, it is a great confidences builder for the kids because you sit higher then a pickup, are able to see much better and it real easy for green horn to point down the road. I don't think I will be giving driving lessons with it any more since it has a 13 speed now.
