03 6.0 Fuel Pressure Pulsation

I got a new problem. (well... new for me anyway)

The engine runs real rough at idle and my fuel pressure gauge is dancing in time with the rough idle. If I get on it hard a few times it will smooth out and the fuel pressure returns to rock solid at 50psi. Could this rough idle and dancing fuel pressure be from combustion pressure leaking back through a stuck injector?

My HPOP pressure is good and seems about normal when the rough idle occurs. When its running smooth it has all the power it usually has.

What are the fuel pressure readings?

Could be the regulator getting stuck. Have you thought about up grading to the blue spring?

With Key On and Engine Off the pressure comes right up to 50. When the engine is idling rough, the pressure gauge swings rapidly in time with the rough idle until I do several hard accelerations. Then the pressure returns to a solid 50 and stays there even under hard acceleration.

I have been thinking that I have a stuck or sticky injector but I dont know how to troubleshoot and diagnose how the injectors are operating.

You will need a scanner like the AE to do an injector test.

It could also be a stiction issue, this condition usually goes away when the injectors warm up. And is real evident when the out side temps get cold(er) then what they are now.

I have noticed that the problem seems to be more evident when the engine is cold. After it warms up the problem usually goes away. Sometimes it takes awhile even after the engine is good and warm.

I have heard about the AE and was doing some research about it. I think I'm ready to go buy one. Where is the best place to order from and what specifically should I get? Are there any extras that are nice to have? Or have you ever said I wish I had a _________?

I dont need alot of high performance, I just want my daily driver to drive well and be reliable. I will buy whatever tools I need if I dont have them allready. I can buy alot of tools for the price of one trip to the dealer.

I was also thinking about the glow plugs. Is it possible that one jug never lights and that is what is causing the rough idle? If that is the case I would expect some smoke. I dont see any smoke. Also I dont think that a jug not firing would cause the fuel pressure pulsations but a stuck open inject could. I'm not 100% sure about any of this, just thinking out loud.

Well I know Strictley Diesel sells them. As for what you need, you'll need the ford advanced package (i thing is what it's called).
I of course would love the complete kit, but that's alot of money.

What I would do first is get some Rev-x and try it out. It has been know to really help.
I believe there is something a little cheaper but can't remember the name.
Try searching stiction in the forum and it will pop up.

Well did a search for the word stiction and found a great thread titled "Rev-X Exposed" started by Harry. I read the entire thread and decided to just go for it. I ordered the AR9100-16 which is claimed to be superior to Rev-X and cheaper too. I will give it a try and see what happens. I suppose at this point it cant hurt.

Now to find a deal on an AE scan tool.

Combustion pressure could also be from a leaking copper seal on the injector tip.
