F350 vs F450
I have been thinking of purchasing a new Superduty to replace my existing. I have looked through a lot of data and for 2011, I cannot find any physical difference between a F350SD and a F450SD other than the F450 has 2" larger rear brakes. The F450 comes std. with the 6.7 and 4:30ls. When I price both out equipped the exact same way (except with 3:73ls in the F350), the F450 cost about $3K more. For 2011 they both have the same frame, tires/wheels, and running gear. Anyone know what other differences there are to justify the $3K difference in price? My local dealer doesn't know and doesn't seem to interested in finding out.

If Iam not mistaken, the 450 has one more leaf spring and bigger brakes.

The F-450 has the wide-track front axle.

The F450 does have 2" larger rear brakes. I don't know about the one extra rear spring leaf, but the in bed cargo capacity is 20lbs less than a F350. I priced the two trucks out online both as loaded King Ranch versions. I can find no justification in the $3K price difference. Looks like a very expensive 450 badge.

I think the 450 has the derated engine also,I would go with the 350 for that alone..

The 450 Superduty does not have the derated engine, the cab/chassis does. If the new 450 does have the wider front axle like my current 450 does, that is a huge plus because it has a much tighter turning radius. The 450 cab/chassis comes with 19.5s which is huge to me because of the weight I am hauling in the bed, 5960 lbs. The cab/chassis may be the best way to go but I like the looks of the Superduty better, the cab/chassis has the derated engine, is not available with many of the luxurious interior amenities, and the cab/chassis has shorter springs in the rear causing a harsh ride when empty.

I ordered a '12 F-450 King Ranch in September and it's scheduled to arrive Oct. 17. I like everything about the new trucks except for the fact they downrated the F-450 pickup from the '08-'10's. Right now I'm not sure I'm going to get the new truck, the '08 F-450 pickup I have now has been the all-time best truck I've ever owned. If I wasn't worried about keeping it past the powertrain warranty I probably wouldn't ever trade it. Still have another year on that.

Was your dealer able to explain the major price difference between the F350 and F450?
I agree, my F450 is also the best truck I have ever owned. When it was stock, it was in my opinion, a piece of crap and I wouldn't still own it today if it still was. I did the dpf delete at 5K miles and gradually pieced the rest in over the next 15K miles. It will pull 33K lbs up a 6% grade at 55 mph and maintain safe egts, coolant temp, and oil temps. This truck has more useable power than either of my previous twin turbo Dodges, couldn't keep the Dodges temps down (except egt) when the power was turned up. There is nothing wrong with this truck, I just want a new one. I think the user controllable 6 speed auto in the new trucks is a huge plus.

I didn't ask about the F-350/450 price difference because I knew I wasn't interested in the F-350. I need the towing capacity of the 450. I'm pretty sure the new truck would meet my needs because the rated towing capacity is the same as my current truck. My main reason for trading is that I don't keep a truck over four years and I would like to have the 6 speed trans and 6.7.

I think the tow capacity is higher on the F450 because of the 4:30 gears. On my online spec sheet, it looks like the F350 is available with optional 4;30's as well.
