Theres the guy that told me the crank price, Ive spoken to Marc on the phone guys, he knows his stuff.
I didnt know the 3408 had a split crank (like the V6 Buick 3.8?) I thought the 60 deg fired uneven pulses on the crank and tore it up ?

When a E-9 is running good its way smoother than a I6. We had a customer that bought a ch w/460 to pull this real heavy piece of equipment they had well long story short they complained so much about the 460 not having enough power that mack (district sales manager) gave them a good deal on a CL with an E-9 they never complained about power after that.

this is photo of 3408 catpiller engine 3408 V-8 photo
now compared to Mack V-8 the E-9 series E-9 engine photo now you can see the diffrence there between the two the cat used the 60° vee block arrangement while the Mack do use 90° vee arrangement that the whole reason why one part with crankshaft have split jorinal [sp] on the Cat due the factory used 60° due the have V-8 , V-12 and V-16 with one set up Merci, Marc |

E9 is a tuff engine. Even has cross bolted mains. I don't know about them running out of power after 1600 RPM. The one I built for a friends truck turns around 3100 RPM and it pulls HARD until the governor shuts the fuel off. It hasn't really had any problems and was driven dailey until about 6 months ago. The military ran some E9's for a while, and they did some testing on them and the failure point on a good engine was over 1500HP and a LOT of RPM.
How long they'll last at big HP levels has a lot to due with how they are driven. Don't run them hard cold, don't bang the governor ever shift. You can run them at high RPM on a pull where the load is sustained. |
