code P0402, no driveability probs?

my 6.0 powerstroke has code P0402 and a weird odor coming from exhaust, but no sluggish behavior,surge, or loss of power associated with the code. a mechanic said it may just be the back pressure sensor but he didnt smell the odor. before i spend a bunch of money, anyone have some insight as to what this could be?

kinda sounds like your egr valve is shot try pulling it out and cleaning it
