Best Year for Ford Diesel Pickup?

HI,

I am a new to Fords; I am a reforming diehard lifetime GM owner and fan. But because of the recent government takeovers of GM and Chrysler, I feel that they will soon be abandoning diesel as a powerplant. Look, GM dropped the 4.5L production after spending million of dollars on development.

So Im here looking for advice: if you were to buy a used Ford crewcab 4x4 diesel, what year would you buy? What year(s) to avoid? Why?

Thanks ahead of time for all your help!
Best,
John

Their extremely hard to find, but you can't go wrong with a 2003 with a 7.3L, these trucks are a hot commodity around here, so good luck.

While they are all very solid trucks, it is hard to beat a late 1999-2003 crew cab with the 7.3. If you're wanting newer, avoid the 2003-2004 6.0 trucks like the plague. 2005-2007 6.0 trucks were better, but still not as reliable as the 7.3. I'm sure this'll spark some "I've got a 200X year 6.0 and have never had any problem" debates, but when you look at the facts, 7.3>6.0.

Personally, I like the look of the 05-07 best. But there was some trouble with the enignes in 04-05 years, some 06's too. Mainly had problems with the turbos and injectors I believe. Most have probably been recalled and repaired by now, but keep that in mind. As far as engines go, the 99-2003.5 7.3 is very reliable. The 03.5-07 6.0 has had its issues, but still a good engine and in stock form, the 6.0 will be faster than a 7.3 stocker. Just do your homework first, with any vehicle you purchase. PSD's are great trucks!

I have an '04 6.0L and wouldn't have it any other way. In my opinion, they all have their own pros and cons and it is luck of the draw with any vehicle. You could pick up a truck based on rave reviews and get a dog. Best thing to do is test drive as many as possible and see what you like. Chris

had a 99, now have an 06. Loved em both. If you get a 6.0 truck, get headstuds put in and you will be in pretty good shape. I actually had more problems with my 7.3 truck than I have had with my 6.0 truck.

You get a 6.0 truck and you will have a great transmission, and a motor that is a lot closer to the GM's that you are used to powerwise, get an 05-up and you will have a nicer and better riding truck than pre-05. But you will need to get headstuds, will cost you $2-$2.5k to have done.

You get a 7.3 truck, and you WILL have transmission problems (almost more definate than a 6.0 needing headstuds) I still believe the 7.3 engine to be very tough and reliable, but the transmission sucks without dumping something like $3k into it.

The 6.0 trucks will be newer with fewer miles on them and will most likely take you more years from now due to that. The 6.0 trucks are quicker to build HP out of (just hit 496 on mine with just injectors/tunes/exhaust/headstuds), and again have BA transmissions.

your so wrong.....even 7.3s have had probs as well as any engine is going to have....02-03 are the best years for 7.3s and I have had VERY little go wrong with my truck and have heard less probs out of 2003s than any other year besides 2007. 2005 from what i have seen local and heard over forums is the worst year of the 6.0. get a carfax or oasis report on whatever you find and if it has really low miles be a little skeptical because that could mean its been out of commission a lot so if its been in the shop mulitple times for same issues, etc. dont touch it but if its fairly clear, maybe few minor things then go for it!

... I knew it was coming. Yes, the 7.3s have problems. Standard problems being the CPS and the fuel bowl heater blowing the PCM fuse. All EASY and CHEAP fixes. Standard problems for the 6.0? Blown headgaskets. Tough choice for me.

Actually, mid 2001 was the last of the forged rods. Late 2001 trucks have the PMRs.
