What would it cost to rebuild a 6.0?

I have a line on a 2003 F350 that looks to be in EXCELLENT shape... It has 260000 miles on it...but I might be able to nail it for under $9000.

That could make it worth my while....but how much do you estimate it would be to rebuild/recondition the motor? (If it came to that)

if you do the work yourself i think...maybe 2-3 grand. But how far would you go, new pistons, bearing, recondition heads, new oil and egr cooler, new head gaskets, and upgrade stock bolts to ARP's? Just wondering if you'd be doing after market upgrades to it if you'd be going through it?

Yeah, that's an important point.....what do you want this 6.0 to do?

No I wouldn't be doing it myself..lol..I was a gearhead back in my younger days, but I'd never mess with any of today's engines, let alone a diesel.

In any event, I want the truck to tow a 5th wheel.

As for the engine..I don't need it to pull down a house, but if I'm going to have it rebuilt I'm not averse to putting some "good stuff" into it.

In that case, with that many miles and if your wanting to have it torn down and rebuilt, i'd put new pistons and rings in it, all new bearing, new oil cooler, get an egr cooler delete kit, rebuild/recondition the heads, new head gaskets with ARP's. Not sure where you're from, but if it's been through the snow and salt...most likely the exhaust manifolds and bolts are rusty and it wouldn't hurt putting new ones on and even getting new manifold bolts and gakets. I'd also look into reconditioning the stock turbo. If you have a shop do this, most likely their labor rate wont be cheap...probably anywhere between 75-100 bucks an hour. So you might be looking somewhere near 5K, but i could be off.

I agree with Strokin, and $5K for a rebuilt engine would be a good deal considering a $9K acquisition fee. I'd check shocks/suspension also. If you will tow a lot, an aftermarket exhaust would be a good idea ($500 or so).

Well, the truck right now is located in the South. I tell you, it looks to be in excellent shape from the pics. It's EXACTLY what I'm looking for being an F350 Dually, with the diesel and 4 wheel drive. The 260000 miles is excessive to be sure...but they're ad says "asking $9900". I get the feeling with the mileage and the rep of a 2003 6.0L I could get it for $9000.

Man.....I'm SERIOUSLY contemplating this right now.

I just need to see more pics of the outside and the interior.

Thanks for your help!!

I think thats not too bad mine has 198 now all stock no problems and it is the lowest milage truck i have owned by about a 100k But the prices the guys are saying seem to be inline with whats out there. if your thinking of going that deep into the motor I would put a few goodies in.
