International V800 class 8 tuck engine??

I was talking to an old International mechanic about the new maxfoce engines and he mentioned that International tried to enter the class 8 engine market before with an engine known as the V800 Now I thought I had a fairly good knowledge of class 8 truck engine history but this one snuck by me I guess. This guy reminisced about this engines like a sentimental person might reminisce about their fist love. I searched the internet for information and was able to come up with a few old brochures. Anybody ever see and or drive one of these things? One thing that caught my eye in the specs that it is over square, kind of unusual for a truck engine.

Not really surprised it might be over square. Many V8 engines are. Gas or diesel.

Never seen or head of it being used in a truck before. Only seen one 550 in a truck. The rest I saw were in 14 and 1568 IH tractors.

This was the same engine that was in the 4586 and 4786 IH 4 wheel drive tractors. It was called a DV-800 300 HP and 725 lb. torque in a 4786. The 4786 was made from 78-81. It was also in the 4568 as a DVT-800 made in 75 and 76.

Do you know or remember anything about a D-301 6 cyl small diesel for Travelalls and 12-1300 series pickups? This was BEFORE the Nissan SD33T in the Souts. I remember seeing one in the late 60s or early 70s.

That's a new one on me. Never knew they put a 301 outside of ag and industrial applications. I have seen some guys take old D-301s and put in old IH trucks.

over squared diesels, 903 cummins 4 3/4 stroke 5 1/2 dia piston a real dog just like the v8 350 int. toro flow was to i believe the 785 v8 cummins looks alot like a 903 but a little less stroke same piston,there may have been more thats all i remember .all were pigs gutless except the vt 903 it ran like a 318 detroit on a good day maybe

Not stupid its a good question...

It means that the Bore of the cyl is larger than the length of the stroke. most often over square engines can spins faster due to the short stroke and will make high hp but lacks some in the torque dept..

From wiki so take it with a grain of salt..

Oversquare, or short-stroke engine
An engine is described as oversquare or short-stroke if its cylinders have a greater bore diameter than its stroke length - giving a ratio value of greater than 1:1.
For example an engine which has 100 millimetres (3.94 in) bore, and 80 millimetres (3.15 in) stroke has a bore/stroke value of:
100 mm / 80 mm = 1.25:1This is generally considered to be a positive trait, since (all things equal), a shorter stroke results in less friction on the cylinder wall, and less stress on the crankshaft.[citation needed] An oversquare engine is generally more reliable,[citation needed] wears less,[citation needed] and can be run at a higher speed. In oversquare engines, low-speed torque tends to be lower, since torque is relative to crank throw - the distance from the crankshaft main bearing centre to the crankpin (big end) centre, as well as the lowering pressure of the combustion gases as the piston descends.
Engines can be modified by being "de-stroked", shortening the stroke to increase maximum rpms and top-end power, at the expense of low-end torque.
Oversquare engines tend to be lighter[citation needed] and shorter[citation needed] than undersquare engines of similar engine displacement along the direction of piston travel, but they are wider in directions perpendicular to piston travel. As the length is not a large problem, these engine types are highly favored by many manufacturers because of their power and compact size.
Some Formula One engines have a bore to stroke ratio of approximately 2.5:1, and are capable of revving to 19,000 rpm.
