Common rail / P-pump conversion

Greetings All,

I am new to the site, been doing some research. I am looking to confirm with Y'all a possibility.
I have a 04.5 Cummins ISB common rail. I am looking to put said motor in my 1942 Dodge Carryall project without the electronics package. i want a vehicle that will be reliable and not dependant on a computer to survive.
So, question is; Can a 2004.5 Common rail be converted to a P7100 mechanical injection without major problems? Obvious would be the timing cover, gears, pump, injectors. Anything I am overlooking?

wouldnt a 12v be a much easier and simpler solution?

Well, perhaps it may be. However, I happen to be in possesion of an 04.5 Cummins with new pistons, rings, bearings and valve job. If I can create a decent product with that base I may be ahead. Maybe not.
I was thinking that I may end up with a stronger, free flowing motor with the 24 valve head.
I just don't want anything to do with electronics in my project. A simple reliable mechanical pump I can work on myself.
Would I be better off to just put a 12 valve head on the short block? But then what about valve clearances, compression, etc. with the later model block?

your biggest problem is going to be the head/injectors. On a common rail the injectors are located under the valve cover beneath the rockers, and are feed from the side through a pilot tube from the common rail and the injector is fired electronically. A 12 valve p-pump makes the injector fire. And the injectors are much different and located on the passanger side of the motor and come in on an angle from the outside of the head. I dont think you gonna find a 12 valve style injector to fit in a common rail head and work. And the piston bowl design is different on a common rail to that of a 12 valve or a 24 valve. So if you were to install a 24 valve head you might have a better chance of getting it to work but your not gonna have the proper spray angle on the piston and it will have a poor burn and sooner or later damage something...hope that helps!

Your best bet maybe to sell that 04.5 and build a P-pumped 24valve!

Thank you for the concise explanation Eric. So it sounds like mixing anything older with the common rail stuff is out of the question. I thought I had a nice base to build from, but I guess thats not gonna fly.

What everyone seems to ignore in their understandable desire to modify the new technology is that the CR makes more power and less pollution because it is an engineered package that relies totally on multiple sensor inputs and computer control at a very high level. The only potentially satisfactory adaptation I can see is to isolate all the functions dealing strictly with power and develop a package for performance. In the CR, economy, emissions, and performance are closely tied together and computer control is utilized at a very high level. Old thread I know.
