Bleeding fuel system
I have a 1993 5.9 3500 and I am new to diesel engines I changed out my fuel filter not knowing that I should have primed the new filter before I installed it. I have air trapped in the system and needing to know the best way to bleed the system. When I crank the engine it tries to fire up but cuts right out. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

There are two steel lines on the fuel filter assy. The line closest to the injection pump has what looks like a small bolt in it. Loosen that small bolt about 1 turn. Then pump the lever on the side of the lift pump. When you see clear fuel coming from the bleeder screw. Tighten it back up. Pump the lever a few more times till your feel the lever getting hard to move. Lock the lever back into the upward postion. Then try to start the truck. You might get lucky.
If it doesn't stay running. Crack the 1st three injectors lines loose. Spin the engine over. As you see the injectors lines throwing high pressure fuel. Tighten them back up. Have the engine spining while your doing this. By the time you have the 3rd line tight. The engine should be running. If it is missing. Loosen the other lines off one at a time. Tighten them as you see high pressure fuel flow. Leave #6 cylinder till last. If the engine isn't missing leave it alone. That one will oil the windshield down.

Yes I did prime the level on the pump and opened the low pressue vaule as suggested in the manuel. So should I go ahead and crack all the injector lines and try to fire up while it is cracked then tighten after all air is out?
Thanks |

just crack the first one loose and she if it will run.....If if keeps running rough do the others also. I can't remember for sure If its the cummins or the old IH tractor engines that you need to crack all of them on.

Hi Phil,
I just saw your reply just as I when I was responding to JDolezal. I did the lever prime and lossen the low pressure valve. I will try and loosen the 1st 3 injectors. Since I am here alone would I be able to crank and let air out then tighten down or would I need a second body to keep it cranking as I tighten? Thanks |
