06-24-4 6.0L - SERVICE REMANUFACTURED ENGINE, CYLINDER BLOCK, AND CYLINDER HEAD IDENTIFICATION

Publication Date: November 15, 2006

FORD: 2003-2005 Excursion
2003-2007 F-Super Duty
2004-2007 E-350, E-450
2003-2007 F-650, F-750

ISSUE:
Some 2003-2007 vehicles equipped with a 6.0L engine may require the cylinder head to be replaced, design changes can affect interchangeability between model years and service of 2003-2007 6.0L engines.

ACTION:
Clarify the design changes and provide a detailed interchangeability guide between the 2003-2007 model years. Identify correct part combinations required for proper engine function, using the information below.

CYLINDER HEAD IDENTIFICATION

The cylinder head version used for the repair will determine the associated head gasket and injector clamp versions to be used (Figure 1). The early - 2006 commonization change increased the cylinder head locating dowel size from 18 mm to 20 mm, to accommodate larger head bolts to be used on the 6.4L engine. This affected the head gasket dowel hole size. The injector clamp design and associated cylinder head casting support area were also changed.

The cylinder head and block dowel hole sizes must be measured to determine the correct cylinder head gasket kit to be used:

20 mm head dowel - Cylinder Head Gasket Kit - 6C3Z-6051-A
18 mm head dowel - Cylinder Head Gasket Kit - 4C3Z-6051-EA
If there is a difference of dowel hole size between the head and block, a stepped dowel, part number 6C3Z-6B041-B, will accommodate different sizes to allow re-assembly of head, gasket and block. This stepped dowel should be ordered along with the head gasket kit until further notice when it will be included in both head gasket kits.

The head gasket and injector clamp versions are not interchangeable; they must be used with the corresponding cylinder head versions.
