06-22-15 HEATER CORE LEAKS - 6.0L ENGINE
Publication Date: October 31, 2006
FORD: 2003-2005 Excursion
2003-2007 F-Super Duty
Some 2003-2007 F-Super Duty and 2003-2005 Excursion vehicles equipped with 6.0L diesel engines may exhibit a leaking heater core. The majority of repeat heater core leaks are due to a high flow rate or use of poor quality coolant.
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the heater core if it is leaking, review the location of the leakage and check the condition of the coolant.
NOTE: IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO COMPLETELY FLUSH ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM TO REMOVE ANY POSSIBLE CONTAMINATION.
Flush and refill coolant, reference Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-03.
Replace the heater core, reference WSM, Section 412-02.
Disconnect the inlet heater hose at the engine outlet port.
Install a restrictor in the inlet heater hose about 5" (127 mm) from engine end of the hose.
Make sure that the tapered end of the restrictor points toward the engine. (Figure 1)
Figure 1 - Article 06-22-15
CAUTION: CORRECT LOCATION AND POSITION OF THE RESTRICTOR IS NECESSARY FOR PROPER FUNCTIONING.
Clamp the restrictor in place using a worm-drive type hose clamp. (Figure 1)
Refill coolant, reference WSM, Section 303-03.
