f-450 vibration

Hi! yesterday i went i my RV dealer to pick-up my FW (was store in his warehouse for winter) i'm pulling for the first time with my new f-450. trip from warehouse to home was 30 miles, truck did well but there was a lot of stop and go and everytime i launch, it makes a terrible vibration the more i push on the fuel pedal the more it vibrate until i get to 3 gear, what is the problem with my "brand new truck" i'm leaving next monday for 2 month (Florida) my FW is a Escalade sportster 42 feet, 3 axle, weighting 19000 pounds, but will weight 21k on monday moorning with 2 harley at the back + lot of personal stuff. i can't duplicate the problem with the truck empty. what is the problem, i'm getting pissed off this truck. Dealer will check with Ford engineer but he never heard such a things. what do you think?? do i make a mistake leaving for south with my truck acting like that ??

Thank

Look at how much sag you have when you are loaded versus unloaded. Use tape measure from ground to top of both front and rear wheel wells in both scanarios, and look at the change. You can also get this measure by crawling under rig and look at the space between the yellow bumper stops and rear axle with and without load. The 11 450's are no where near capable of handling pin weights. The sag from pin weight changes the driveline angle and you get dive line binding vibrations. I would have thought a 3-axle toy hauler had less pin weight and would not have this problem.

Ford can change shims between frame and carrier bearing but this ususlly will put the shudder in one case versus the other. One guy on this or another forum got Ford to custom make a larger driveline when none of their efforts fixed the problem, but I think that was a 450. If you have the sag, air bags are quicker/easier than giving up rig for analysis.

My 2011 450 (13,050 GCWR versus 14,500 for the 08 model) sagged 2.5 inchs under load (08 sagged less than an inch with same load) and actually lifted my front wheel well a full inch taking 500# off the front axle. Headlight were in the trees loaded. Air bags picked up rear so 1.5 inch sag put weight back onto front axle and fixed the problem. Yes bags coul dhave lifted the load to level but then ride is a bit harder putting more stress on 5er pin etc. The above was slightly over 3k pin weight and right at rear axle and GVWR verified at CAT scales. For my configuration, Ford's stated GCWR is way over reality unless you are pulling a heavy load on a flatbed and most of that load is on trailer wheels - most big 5'er campers are way too pin heavy in comparison so Ford's data isn't very realistic. Don't get me wtong, the 6.7pulls as if way less than 16k is behind me.

Good luck,

If yours is an early early (April 2010 or so) 2011, a pop during pullout when turning with a load could indicate bad liited slip assembly. Sounds like you do not have this.

Thank for reply! mine was built november 2010, i can't believe that i bought a f-450 which is supposed to pull about anything, and i'm having problem already, why can't Ford built a Truck that can handle what it should do. i did'nt bought a F-250, i bought a F-450 which i paid a lot of $$$, , i just spoke to my dealer about your statement and they never heard of that(i'm probably the only one in america with a big trailer) any way i,m leaving on Monday with a brand new truck (2000km) ,we will see what happened. I'll mesure sag when i sit my rig on it and let you know.

Ok , i'm in florida now, truck went wonderfull, lot of power 6.92 miles per gallons hand calculated for the whole trip. a lot more than i had tough, do you think it is a reasonable fuel consumption for that much weight )

Yours has fewer miles and a heavier load. You mighty have had a hillier route than most of my travels, or a heavier foot.

I pull 13k, a combined weight of 16,650, with my 2011 450. I have airbags, big mudflaps, and a bug deflector otherwise stock for wind drag. My 5er is a 2 axle high profile Carriage Cameo. It is just over 13 feet tall, with a mostly blunt nose yet the top has a very slight dip down (about 1 foot over 12 feet) in the front. The dip begins just behind the front A/C but I am 6'0 and can stand up straight between bed and front closet.

At 10k miles I get 15 mpg if on highway full tank at 65 MPH (right at 2k RPM) running empty. Loaded per apove I get 10.5 if I ever stay below 60 for a tank; 9.5 loaded at 65 which is my normal speed. Stops and starts or city traffic really kill MPG and create more regens even when "on" for more than 6 hours in a day. Empty mileage is 2 MPG better than I got at 5k miles, and almost 3 MPG better than at 1k miles. Loaded MPG might have improved 1 MPG since new. all hand calc which seem to be consistently 5% worse than the dash says. It is a bit worse on highways in the hills of W Virginia and NH.

Running empty I am guessing (based upon dash info over short durations of 15 minutes or so when fully warmed up that MPG gets about 0.5mpg worse for every 5 MPG over 50, then a full MPG worse for every 5 over 70. and about 1 mpg better for every 5 MPH under 50. High speeds are reall killers with the tall flat fronted trailers.

Empty on highway I have consistently regenerated every 200 miles for 10 miles/10 minutes. Loaded it is every 125 miles or so. In town loaded is can be every 80 miles.
