Questions about the carb on my old Dodge truck.

I rebuilt the carb on my 1972 D200. I got the truck to run and run well. However, I have to keep on the throttle to keep it running. Also, it is puffing out a cloud of white smoke. I know those are tuning issues but I am not sure how to do it. Also, there was a lot of fuel pouring out of it. That turned out to be some lose fasteners. I tightened them down and stopped all the leaks but one. On the driver side of the carb where the rod goes through and operates the butter flies a steady drip of fuel is coming out. Any ideas what that is? I would obviously like to avoid tearing into this carb again.

It's leaking fuel onto the intake manifold

Dose the carb whistle at all when you get it running ?
sound like an internal gasket is leaking

It looks like it is just coming from that shaft. I do not hear any other noises. I think I need a bushing for the shaft but I do not know where to get one.

Wearing out around the shaft on the butterfly is a known issue. I believe there are bushing kits that require the shaft bore be drilled oversize then a new bushing is pressed into the body.

Not sure but try a NAPA handles a large number of commercial accounts and some one who knows how to look for uncommon parts. They should be able to call vendors that supply them to find the part. The other option is to buy a rebuilt and inspect it for wear before buying.

I found out there is a guy here in town who still messes with carbs. I will have to stop by and see what he has.

With the puff of white smoke, maybe adjust the air fuel screws and how is the idle on it? And also you can peck the carb alittle and help it to quit leaking. That was the big issue on the holly carbs.

Thanks. I think I may have it worked out. But I had to drian the fuel out. I think that was part of my problem. I did not realize how long that fuel had been in the tank. I will be cracking the lines open and blowing them out. Well, after I repair the air lines from my compressor anyway. I had one blow out on me the other day.

We use to spray everything down with WD40 with the engine running to see if it was leaking. If it was the engine usually would idle smoother and you could identify if it was the carb or the intake.
