Gear oil leaking out rear hub

More inquisitive post than anything really. Read other articles and posts on rear hub service. But many wondering what its actually leaking out of.

Are the nuts just loose and its leaking out the cover? or does that axle (Dana 70) slide inside the spindle?

Thanks for satisfying curiousity before I tear things apart, even though thats really how I'm going to find out

The cover on the rear of the rear axle diff can come loose and leak, or the gasket/RTV silicone is dried out.

The Dana 70 REAR axle shaft is a full floating axle (Axle shaft transmits power ONLY. Does NOT carry ANY weight from the vehicle.) The axle flange ("cover" as you put it) is a part of the axle shaft its self. Not a separate piece.

In this case, there is a gasket or RTV silicone where the axle flange is bolted to the axle hub and then there is a oil seal that can leak on the back side of the wheel hub.

GM does/has use/d full floating axle shafts that have a cap on the hub. The shaft is splined and slips into the diff, and on the other end it has teeth (looks like a chain sprocket of sorts) and the hub end accepts the teeth. Still has a gasket and oil seal setup like the Dana.

If no one else replies before I do, I'm at work at the moment but I'll check my socket size when I get home for you.
