thinkin about tradin' it up!

ok guys, im really considering finding a way to either trade my truck or sell my truck for an early 24v or maybe a 12v.
any suggestions?
what should i look for? what should i watch out for? whats the difference between a vp44 and the p pump? which ones better?

any input would be GREAT. im just lookin for a switch to a more mechanical truck. i dont like electronics.

thanks guys
erik

Keep what you have. with the HO 5.9Cr you have one of the best Cummins Configurations to date. Sure 12v are great but try to talk to a passenger while driving. Your cab is way nicer than the 2nd Gen. VP trucks are very picky when it comes to fuel pressure. You have a good ride with that rig Erik, With the way its setup it will provide you with years of service. There are times I miss my 01 24V, then I wake up and realize that Im better off now, I would hate to see you trade DOWN and then not be happy. If you don't believe me, drive a 01 that is stock, a 12v that is stock, then go drive you 24v CR on a stock tune and I bet that your truck will put the biggest smile on your face when you hit that skinny pedal.

Im happy with my truck im just sick of everything being marked up 1000% for the damn thing. Injectors should not cost $400 each. I just hate how much everything costs for it.

You may say that now, 6 weeks after you have it, I would lay money down saying you cant think in that cab... I put 46k on a VP truck in 18 mos, Trust me when I say Keep your CR.....

well i value your input and i could possibly agree with you in that i ALWAYS wanted a 6speed and now i hate the damn thing. but i would rather deal with noise over having to shift. lol. can i ask you this question though neel?
do you like the CR just becuase of the "quietness" compared to a 12v? or are there other reasons? i mean right now, im young and i really dont mind loud noises. lol.

i'll share my recently devised plan with you. not sure if im going to carry it out but here it goes:
sell my truck for $18-22K. (thats optimistic sp?)
pay off the rest of my $18K loan i took out, which i owe about $12k
put about half of the remaining money down on this truck i really want (a '97 2500 QCLB with 85K miles on it from washington)
put the remainder of the money in the bank

i mean i hear where you are coming from with the noise and such but is that the ONLY reason you are advising me not to get a truck like this? dont get me wrong i value your input but im lookin for something different. im MAINLY trying to get out from underneath my $550 a month payments. i just cant do it anymore. im just trying to figure out what i want to do right now. there is a place thats selling a few 2001's that im gonna try to go test drive next saturday to get a feel for exactly how loud they are.
im looking for something cheaper. parts for our trucks are soo darn expensive. i LOVE the electronic aspect of our trucks, that you can put a tuner on and have 200+ extra hp. but im also a fan of doing everything the old fashioned way, putting parts on it. idk. im just throwing ideas around in my head right now. so ANY input from ANYONE would be greatly appreciated!!!

thanks again for your input neel. i really do appreciate it!

thanks
erik

If you trade your truck in now, I would say the best any dealer would do you is 15K. You could prolly sell it for 17000-18500, I just ran it through KBB and the suggested retail( what a car lot would sell it for is 20k which gives them the cushion to "deal" to get as much of the value" ) Trade in Value is 14500. Your truck is 7 years old, you sell it and go with a 97, that truck is 14 years old. There is no secret the older gen old bodies are not all that great. Here is another example ( I know you listed a 12v but follow for just a sec) When my VP died, I had nearly 3 grand in it 4 mo after buying it to replace the VP44 and lift pump. That was the dealer doing it I know so it could be done a little cheaper, but they are still high dollar parts. Just because the truck is older does not mean that all the parts are cheaper. You say you don't want to shift gears anymore and I can understand that, but the 47RHs (12vs) and 47REs (VP-early CR) were an ok at best trans on a stock truck. While you might get lucky and be able to mod the truck for a little the trans is a major weak point. So there is a couple grand for a stock rebuild or 3500-5000 for a good Goerend built trans depending on what internals you go with. You say you owe around 12K? how many months is left on your truck? If you paid 400 bucks a month you would own your truck in less than 36mos. If you can pay 450 a month you cut that down and even save a little in interest. Just some food for thought. Noise is not the only reason I say keep what you have, parts are still expensive and believe it or not the CRs are just as reliable or maybe even a little better. I guess what I am looking at is that you started with a very nice truck in great shape that is in a lot of peoples minds one of the best drive trains you could get in a Dodge/Cummins Config, if should provide years of service.

im 1 year down on a 3 year loan. i hear what you are sayin for sure. you DEFINITLY are makin me think twice.

thank you for the advice neel. i really appreciate it. im gonna have to think. i REALLY want an older one but i do like the new one.

the only reason i kind of want to get rid of it is the fact that i think my stupid injectors are failing yet again. im sick of ****ing around with these injectors. i honestly dont know how they are failing becasue i have a fass and the xtra filter should have protected me from injector failure. im not sure.

thats the main reason i want to get rid of it. plus i just want a 12v or early 24v becasue i LOVE that diesel compression sound and my truck isnt really loud enough for me (compression wise). But i guess i'll just have to pay off my truck and then buy another one.
