Loud knocking and flames

My husband was driving his 2005 Dodge Ram Diesel when it started to knock loud. He thought it was a flat tire but when he pulled over he saw it was on fire underneath. He put it out with an extinguisher and had it towed home. He just bought it 3 weeks ago and had to have the AC (blend door?) fixed and now this! Any idea what might have caused that. I'm afraid of what the repair bill might be.

It really depends on where or what was on fire. With out seeing where the fire started it would be very hard to guess what a possible cause was. Will your insurance not cover the fire?

Knocking and flames

Turns out the fire was minor and did not do any significant damage. Mechanic said the engine seized and needs to be completely rebuilt. There were only 2 qts of oil in it. Some was lost when the engine blew. My hub estimated about 4 qts. He just had the oil changed less than 3 weeks ago. The shop is saying the truck burned up that much oil during that time and its not their fault. There were some small leaks on the driveway the size of a quarter, but nothing substantial. There weren't plums of smoke coming out the exhaust (a bit of black smoke when he started it) and it was parked for a full week when he wasn't working so he really just drove it a couple weeks. Is it possible for it to burn 8-9 qts of oil that fast, even if it dripped 1qt out? Shop is asking 5k to rebuild it...what a nightmare!!!

sounds like they gave it a gasser oil change, 5 quarts and sent it on its way.... truck tried to live, but missing 2 gallons of oil is hard on any engine.
