transmision question

I have 96 5 speed the 3-4 shift is a big jump i understand the 6 speed that 3-4 is a half step is that true if so what is involved in swapping from the 5 to the six ... and truck is 4x4. or does someone make a spliter that can hold up to twins towing all the time
