Oily smell by drivers door?

anyone know why my truck has the scent of oil or gearlube right at the drivers door?

im thinking its because of the crankcase vent?? not too sure.

Most likely the vent.....what kind of oil are you running. Some have a stronger scent than others.

Rotella has it's own smell, Valvoline Premium Blue does and my Amsoil does as well......and they all smell different.

Any drips on the drive? Crawl under and take a peak to make sure but if it's all clean it's just coming from the vent. I know it's odd and I still get a little nervous when I jump out with the truck running when I get my mail cause i get a whiff of oil every time.

everything is CLEAN AS A WHISTLE! just finished undercoating it yesterday. she looks goood. but im in the same boat as you. i jump out to fuel 'er up every now and then (every two days!! ) and i get a little smell of it. im not sure.

i have a buddy who says that EVERY cummins, 12 or 24, smelled like that. his dad owned 7 and he owned 4 and he said they all smelled like that.

Maybe your vent is clogged like Philip R said. but id just keep a eye out for it! Thats what happen to my 97' and it was the tappet cover.

97' Cummins 2500 Gauges from glowshift (EGT, boost) Fuel pressure gauge from auto-meter. Stage 2 airbox, boost elbow, barrels & plungers turned.Custom fuel plate,Airdog 150gph.AFC mods & 3K GSK.SDX injectors (stage 3 140hp).Drilled wastegate.Converted to a NV4500 with a double disc. Being restored from the ground up


01' Cummins 2500 (dads) with a Hotrod pump,100hp injectors, Fass 150, Edge juice with attitude,also plug and power chip,stage 2 ice box,4 1/2 exgaust pipe,HX40

My tappet cover leaks....I get a little spot about the size of a 50 cent piece under the truck every morning....

That small a leak from the tappet cover might be sealed with NAPA external gasket or check the cover bolts for torque and degrease it, let it dry and spray a heavy coat of paint around it.
